It has been such a long time since I did any kind of figure photography. But today, I decided to do a mini figure photoshoot in my room with the photo equipments I've bought.
One of the biggest differences between indoor and outdoors photoshoots are the lighting, which you're the one who's mostly controlling how you should light up the scene. This is something I did today to explain a little bit to have good lighting indoors.
To be warned, I am not an expert in lighting but I do have a more general idea of what should be done while doing figure photography indoors. Moreover, I am a believer that you shoud first have fun in doing photography first rather than thinking what's "correct" or "wrong". Just because I'm telling you this does not mean this is the correct and the only way to do it.
First things first, you want to have what photographers call "Soft light". It is a kind of light that gives out a nice, pleasing look to your photo subjects that makes the shadows not too harsh. One of the easiest way to do this is to put somekind of diffusion in front of your light. During a cloudy day outdoors, you get this soft light by default since the clouds are what diffuses the sun rays to create this soft light.
Second, make your light work together. Most of the time you would want to use two or more source of light to photograph your figures. It's because usually the light you use will play a role in lighting the photo. You can see in the example of how combining these roles, will make your photos look more and getting more noticed by the figure photography senpais out there.
You can check in each photo description to have more explanation of the lighting.
Thank you very much for reading. Have fun!
