San Pietro di Castello, Venice.
This nondescript church used to be the city’s cathedral from mid-15th to the early 19th century. The centrally located San Marco basilica was technically the private chapel of the doge, and only became a cathedral after Napoleon conquered and dismantled the independent Venetian state.
San Pietro di Castello is located on a little island near the industrial district of Arsenale, about as far away from the government nexus at San Marco and the commercial hub of Rialto as you can get while still being in Venice, and is is fairly sparsely decorated by Venetian standards. Which makes it an interesting testament to the power of the Venetian State and the limited power Rome had in these parts.
