In 1282, King Dinis gifted the town of Óbidos as a wedding present to his new bride, Queen Saint Isabel. This started a centuries-long tradition where Portuguese kings would bestow the town to their queens upon marriage. The queens governed, expanded the village, and enriched its culture, cementing its nickname as the "Town of Queens". 👑

The Muralha de Óbidos (Óbidos Town Walls) is a striking 1.5 km fortification completely encircling a medieval Portuguese village. Originating from Moorish rule and fortified by early Portuguese kings, the walls span up to 13 meters high. Unlike modern tourist sites, the walls do not have safety railings. Visitors can walk almost the entire perimeter along the adarve (ramparts), requiring a bit of caution due to narrow, uneven stone paths and steep drops. 🧱

Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau is a specialty food store located on the main street that elevates the classic Portuguese codfish fritter. It is famous for its unique recipe, immersive atmosphere, and pairing with premium Portuguese wine. Traditional pastéis de bacalhau (cod cakes) contain only cod, potato, egg, onion, and parsley. This shop's signature version features a gooey, melted center of Serra da Estrela sheep's cheese, which is a rich and famously controversial twist among locals. The hefty fritters are traditionally paired with a small glass of Port wine (or cherry liqueur/Ginjinha). The sweetness of the port beautifully cuts through the savory, salty cod and rich cheese. 😋

The store is designed like an upscale, vintage shop. While you eat, your snack is often accompanied by live violin music being played right in the store, fitting Óbidos' romantic medieval atmosphere. The Óbidos location is situated within a UNESCO Creative City of Literature, merging food, history, and culture into one stop. 🎻

The "Museu de Sardinha" in Óbidos is not a traditional museum, but rather a whimsical retail experience celebrating Portugal's canning heritage. The vibrant shop features walls plastered with colorful tins and is part of the famous O Fantástico Mundo da Sardinha Portuguesa brand. The colourful interior is designed to look like a time-travel carnival and often features elements like a carousel, making it one of the most photographed spots in Óbidos.

Canned sardines became a Portuguese institution thanks to Napoleon Bonaparte, who ordered the mass canning of fish to feed his troops during his campaigns. The store's most popular feature is its wall of cans labelled by year. You can buy a tin stamped with your birth year, which details major historical events that occurred during that specific time.

Igreja de São Tiago (St. James Church) in Óbidos, Portugal, is a 12th-century chapel that has been uniquely transformed into a functioning bookstore. Originally built in 1186 for the Portuguese royal family, today its historic altar and soaring nave are filled with thousands of books, creating a serene, literary atmosphere. 📚

The original church was completely leveled by the catastrophic 1755 earthquake. When it was rebuilt in 1772, the facade was flipped to face the town’s main street, Rua Direita, rather than the castle.

Igreja de Santa Maria de Óbidos was built on the site of a Visigothic temple and a later mosque. The current structure primarily reflects 16th and 17th-century architecture, blending Renaissance, Mannerist, and Baroque styles.

Two interesting facts:
- in 1441, the church hosted the wedding of King Afonso V and his cousin Isabel of Coimbra when they were just 10 and 8 years old, respectively.
- the interior is famous for its stunning walls covered with azulejos from floor to ceiling in blue and white 17th-century tiles (dating from 1680–1690).

Porta da Vila is known for its stunning 18th-century blue and white azulejo tiles, the gate serves as a grand introduction to the town's historic cente. : Built around 1380, it features a double, staggered "elbow" entrance designed to prevent direct cavalry charges, a common tactic in Gothic military architecture.

Oratory of Our Lady of Piety: Located between the two gates, this small balcony chapel is dedicated to the town's patron saint. It was embellished around 1740–1750 with tiles depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ.
Royal Inscription: Above the gate is an inscription ordered by King João IV: "A Virgem Nossa Senhora foi concebida sem pecado original" (The Virgin, Our Lady conceived without original sin), placed in gratitude for protection during the Restoration of Independence in 1640.Artistic Details: The ceiling of the gate is ornately painted with a crown of thorns, mirroring the religious themes of the tile panels.
