Artist Spotlight with Francesco Aglieri Rinella! 🤩

Francesco Aglieri Rinella is an Italian documentary photographer. His journey with Trieste Photo Days began in 2022 at Trieste Photo Young, where he placed second in the selection made by Nino Migliori and Susan Meiselas of Magnum Photos.
The following year he was a finalist in the Projects & Portfolios category of URBAN Photo Awards 2023, and West Safari won the exhibition prize at the Poreč Museum in Croatia.
In 2024 Galaxies Beneath a Dying Sky was shortlisted in Harry Gruyaert's selection.

The project grew out of a 28-day journey through the American Midwest, a land without mountains, its flat horizon stretching beneath a restless sky, suspended between solitude and boundless openness. Aglieri Rinella photographs places steeped in history, whether repopulated, abandoned or entirely forgotten, and the people who live among them.

In this video he talks about his American projects, born of journeys prepared over months and made slowly, on medium and large format. He describes his encounters with the people he photographed along the way, strangers who became essential to the story, and his choice to remain a third party to what he sees. He also recounts meeting Alec Soth while working on the project, and closes with a piece of advice for anyone taking up photography today.

The exhibition at PURO is still on display! 😁

Before we start setting up the new exhibitions for the Trieste Photo Days Festival 2026, we’d like to remind you that the exhibition at our annual partner, PURO, will remain on display until September 30th!

The venue is currently featuring “Night Moves (Photo Therapy)”, a portfolio by Barrold, a project that explores a journey of creative renewal through street photography, born from the desire to overcome the apathy and creative block experienced after the COVID lockdown.

Shot over just two evenings in Lyon, France, the series invites us to rediscover the beauty of everyday moments, often overlooked simply because they are always right there in front of us. ✨

If you’re in Trieste and don’t know where to have dinner, head to PURO, located in one of the city’s liveliest nightlife areas and take the opportunity to enjoy the exhibition while you’re there! 🤩

We are delighted to announce that the winning project of the ninth Trieste Civic Museums Award is Holding On by Michele Zousmer, an ongoing project exploring the solitude of elderly women in Romania and Bulgaria.

The project was selected by Claudia Colecchia, senior archivist and head of the Photographic Archive and Library at the Municipality of Trieste’s Civic Museums of History and Art, and Michela Messina, curator of the Civic Museums of History and Art and the Sartorio Civic Museum.

Since 2017, the partnership between URBAN Photo Awards and the Museums and Libraries Service of the Municipality of Trieste | Musei Civici Trieste has led to a solo exhibition at one of the city’s leading museum venues.

Holding On will be on display at the Sartorio Civic Museum from October 23 to November 8, 2026, in dialogue with the museum’s collection of ceramics, books, and paintings. Zousmer will also receive the award in Trieste during the URBAN Photo Awards ceremony on Saturday, October 24, 2026, as part of the 13th edition of Trieste Photo Days.

In Holding On, photography becomes a way of looking closely at a condition that is both intimate and collective. Through portraits of women in their eighties and nineties, Zousmer captures bodies marked by time, everyday gestures and domestic spaces, creating a narrative suspended between memory, endurance and vulnerability.

Many of these women were left alone after the death of their husbands and the departure of their children in search of work elsewhere. Living often in isolated areas, without social networks, family support or adequate state provision, they remain keepers of family memories and a cultural heritage that is gradually disappearing.

Zousmer’s approach never exploits their fragility, but instead highlights their dignity, resilience and determination to carry on with everyday life. The project transforms the individual portrait into a universal reflection on solitude, memory and our collective responsibility towards old age in rapidly ageing societies.

Michele Zousmer is an American humanitarian photographer whose work places human experience at its centre. Her images seek out fleeting moments of grace and beauty in lives marked by profound hardship, giving a voice to individuals and communities often pushed to the margins of society.

In 2025, Zousmer won the TPD Best Author Edilimpianti Innovation Partner Award with MIS[S]UNDERSTOOD, a project devoted to the women of the Irish Traveller community.

We are delighted to announce that the URBAN Book Award 2026 goes to 𝐘𝐮𝐣𝐢 𝐇𝐚𝐢𝐤𝐚𝐥 for 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐧’𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐬 𝐀𝐧𝐲𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞?, chosen by the jury chaired by photographer Mihaela Noroc.

Why Aren’t You Taking Photos Anymore? begins with a question.
In the last days of his life, Haikal’s father quietly asked him why he had stopped taking photographs. At the time, he did not grasp the weight of those words. He had given up photography almost ten years earlier, for no particular reason, simply drifting away from it.
His father died in March 2020 and the question was left unanswered.

Over the years, it kept coming back, sometimes gently, more often with a sense of guilt, until it could no longer be ignored.
Haikal started photographing again, first with his phone and later with a second-hand rangefinder camera, walking the streets with no project in mind but with a need to reconnect.
In the scenes he came across, he recognised the gestures and routines that had shaped his father’s life.
The book does not tell his father’s story; instead, it shows how the memory of a person survives in the smallest details and how it continues to shape the way those left behind look at the world.

So far, the book exists as a handmade limited edition of 100 copies, bound by the author himself, and it will be published on the occasion of Trieste Photo Days 2026.

The 2026 Book Award jury was chaired by Mihaela Noroc, author of The Atlas of Beauty, a remarkable project that for over ten years has brought together portraits and stories of women from all around the world.

We are also delighted to announce that three further projects received an Honourable Mention for the strength of their narrative and visual construction:

A personal portrait of the Isle of Man, inspired by the tradition of classic photobooks and Robert Frank’s The Americans. Through an attentive and non-judgemental gaze, Gadeyne portrays the island and its inhabitants as a multifaceted reflection on society, identity and the human experience.

We are thrilled to officially announce the 4 semifinalists of URBAN Photo Arena Under 35 and the Best Voter! 🎉

Their photographs will be printed and exhibited during Trieste Photo Days, in Sala Fittke, together with the other 12 photographs that made it to the Round of 8.

The semifinalists will be our guests at the festival, so they can join us in person for the awards ceremony. 😁

Up until this point, participants have been voting for each other’s photographs, but from the semifinals onwards, the decision will be in the hands of some members of the jury present at the Festival.

🌍 𝐃𝐎𝐓𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐈𝐂 launches 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐭, its first OPEN CALL dedicated to climate change! 📸

DOTLOGIC – Società Cooperativa Impresa Sociale Impresa Culturale e Creativa is proud to launch Overshoot, its first international open photography call dedicated to climate change.
The initiative accompanies The Shape of Heat (La Forma del Calore), a project created by Exhibit Around as part of RE-ACTIVE (Interreg VI-A Italia-Slovenia 2021-2027).

⚠️ The open call is exclusively reserved for 𝐃𝐎𝐓𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐈𝐂 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬! ⚠️

Selected photographs will be exhibited at Magazzino 26 in Trieste from October 23 to November 8, 2026, in the same exhibition spaces that will host Mark Power and Christopher Morris during Trieste Photo Days 2026, two internationally renowned figures in contemporary photography. 😎

Overshoot invites photographers from around the world to explore climate change in all its dimensions, from transforming landscapes to the people who adapt, resist and live with the consequences of a changing planet.

We're looking for single photographs that explore the impact of climate change on places, communities and everyday life through landscape, reportage, portraiture, documentary photography, street photography or fine art.

Selected works will be exhibited alongside HEATALY, the photographic project by Filippo Ferraro, and published in the official festival catalogue. 📖

DOTLOGIC joins Exhibit Around in raising awareness about climate change by supporting The Shape of Heat (La Forma del Calore), a project developed within RE-ACTIVE (Interreg Italy-Slovenia 2021–2027).


The project explores heat waves in Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia through graphic visualizations curated by DEAMS – Department of Economics, Business, Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Trieste, with scientific support from Francesco Pauli (Full Professor of Statistics), Gioia Di Credico (RTT Researcher) and Vincenzo Gioia (Researcher).

Join a two-day workshop with Christopher Morris, one of the world's leading contemporary documentary photographers and a founding member of VII Photo Agency.
This is a unique opportunity to work closely with a renowned photographer, receive direct feedback on your work and deepen your photographic vision.✨

Each participant should prepare a selection of photographs that best represents their photographic identity:
📂 Images must be organized in a folder named with the participant's full name.

Other additional material, such prints and book dummies, is also welcome.
