Gross…

If you’re upset with someone you might very well tell them to “Eat sh!t” but did you know that people in the medieval era actually did?

From as far back as ancient times right through to the medieval era and even into modern times animal dung was often as medicine. Greek white was a popular cure prescribed by medieval physicians and it was the white coating on dried dog dung. It was used to cure sore throat, tonsillitis and lung ailments in general. Externally it was used to treat tumors. It was thought that each type of animal dung had different therapeutic uses.
For example mice excrement was useful for intestinal worms, in the 12th century doctors recommended oxen dung for rheumatism or fever sheep s**t was used for jaundice. Some more exotic cures called for crocodile or elephant dung; but most London apothecaries stocked dog, cow or horse dung. While the thought may be disgusting dried dung from healthy animals does have antimicrobial and even antibiotic properties.
