Happy to be among the finalist in the 7 annual contest.

📷 1 and 3 - In the Animals category, this Emerald Glass Frog was found in an Ecuadorian cloud forest. This image was taken by illuminating the leaf from underneath using a torch and shallow DoF. The clear body of the glass frog glows green from the leaf. There are many species of glass frogs and in these dense forests new species are still being discovered.

📷 2 and 4 - In the Underwater category, Ghost goby, a small fish growing to a maximum of 2cm, survive by being skittish and camouflaging amongst their coral homes. If you are a diver and haven’t yet spotted these little guys, once you attune your eyes, you’ll see them everywhere!

Delighted to be a finalist in the “Art of Nature” category of the 2025 BigPicture: Natural World Photography Competition, hosted by the California Academy of Sciences. Thank you to all the judges of . Photos will be displayed at the Academy’s annual BigPicture exhibition.

The dichromatic spots of a hard coral provides camouflage for a Mozambique ghost goby. Camouflage is a way of life for many of nature’s creatures, and their adaption and evolution is mind blowing.

This split shot, or over-under photo, used a large dome, and wide-angle lens to capture life below, and scenery above, the water. Taken in Grand Cayman, here the Southern Stingrays have become so accustomed to boats and human visitors, possibly habituated by fisherman cleaning their catch and throwing away squid, that they flock towards the presence of humans. Changing the behavior of wildlife, even indirectly, raises conservation concerns. Since 2013, the Cayman Islands passed the National Conservation Act, to regulate interactions and protect the species.

Special thanks to and for a fantastic morning.

On Tuesday the 12th of September, high solar winds from a large coronal mass ejection allowed the UK to witness the amazing natural phenomenon of the aurora borealis, as far south as Cornwall.

Here in Glencoe we were fortunate, and the stars had aligned (pun intended) giving us clear skies in a notoriously cloudy and wet area of the UK, during a new moon, to allow us to view Nature’s amazing light show.

The Ocean is full of things that can appear so alien. This is a Diamondback squid egg mass, found floating in the open ocean. These egg masses can be up to 130cm long, containing nearly 50,000 eggs with each egg being less than half a centimeter long, held together in a gelatinous casing, with eggs in a double spiral.

Encountering these egg masses in the wild is apparently rare. So rare that even with thousands of dives, a diver may never see a wild Diamondback squid egg mass. We got in the water to photograph a Hawksbill sea turtle, having seen the turtle at the surface. Once in the water however, this strange floating structure, which I couldn’t identify at the time, immediately drew my attention away from the turtle.

This photo was a shortlisted for the Motif Collection photography competition “Minimalism” category in 2022. The colour version is also shown here.

Fishing and shipping equipment pose hazards to marine wildlife. This hawksbill sea turtle was tangled in a buoy and line. The turtle was clearly tired, and the buoy was preventing it from diving, exposing the turtle to predators. Attempts to remove this by crew from the boat was not successful (photos 2). So jumped in with a kitchen knife (photo 1) and managed to free the turtle (photo 3), here with fellow divers and .photos as we watched the turtle swim away. The buoy, covered in barnacles (photo 4), was brought onto the boat and disposed of.

Hawksbill sea turtles are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUNC) Red List. Sadly, this is one of many marine species that has been harmed by human activity.

Today is World Oceans Day! The United Nations established June 8th as World Oceans Day since 2009, to raise global awareness about issues related to our Oceans.

2023 marks the 10th year of the UN World Oceans Day photography competitions. I am hugely honoured to be awarded Third place in the Underwater Sea Scapes category.

Taken in Los Islotes in Mexico, this photo depicts a mother California sea lion and two pups sharing an intimate and playful moment under a huge shoal of sardines. This area is now highly protected - a no catch zone, which has allowed the flora and fauna of the area to recover and thrive. The protection offered by being a UNESCO world heritage site and a National Marine Park has helped re-establish this sea lion colony.

Thank you to , and the judges and organizers for this honour.
