Questa piccola nettarinia l’avevo fotografata durante il mio ultimo viaggio in Sudafrica.

Era una nettarinia del Capo (Cinnyris chalybeus), con il corpo verde metallico e quel particolare doppio collare blu e rosso che risalta sul petto che nella luce diventava quasi brillante. Ricordo ancora quanto fosse difficile seguirla tra la vegetazione. Si muoveva continuamente, fermandosi solo per pochi istanti, abbastanza però per riuscire a portare a casa qualche fotografia.

Era il 2023. Sono passati tre anni e tra pochi giorni sarò di nuovo in Sudafrica.

Un nuovo viaggio, nuovi luoghi da esplorare e, inevitabilmente, nuove fotografie da cercare. Ma prima di tutto c'è quella sensazione che ormai conosco bene: sapere che manca davvero poco.

Ci siamo.

🇬🇧 I photographed this little nectarine during my last trip to South Africa.

It was a Southern double-collared sunbird (Cinnyris chalybeus), with its metallic green body and distinctive double blue and red collar that stands out on its chest, almost glowing in the light. I still remember how difficult it was to track it through the vegetation. It moved constantly, stopping only for a few moments, but long enough to take a few photographs.

It was 2023. Three years have passed, and in a few days I'll be back in South Africa.

A new journey, new places to explore, and, inevitably, new photographs to seek out. But above all, there's that feeling I've come so well to know: knowing that there's really not much left to do.

Here we are.

È arrivato il momento di rimettere il Sudafrica 🇿🇦 nello zaino. Sto per tornare in Sudafrica, alla ricerca di nuovi incontri e nuove fotografie.

Questa fotografia ritrae una balena franca australe (Eubalaena australis), osservata e fotografata direttamente dalla spiaggia durante il mio primo viaggio. È uno di quegli incontri che non si dimenticano facilmente e che mi ricordano perché il Sudafrica è una destinazione così speciale per chi ama la fotografia naturalistica.

Prima di partire di nuovo, ho deciso di riaprire quell’archivio e condividere con voi gli scatti, i luoghi, l’attrezzatura e i preparativi che mi accompagneranno verso una nuova avventura.

Da oggi inizierà un percorso che mi porterà fino alla partenza. Ripercorrerò alcuni dei momenti più significativi del mio primo viaggio, racconterò i luoghi che visiterò, le specie che spero di incontrare e tutto ciò che c’è dietro l’organizzazione di un viaggio fotografico.

This photograph portrays a southern right whale (Eubalaena australis), observed and photographed directly from the beach during my first trip. It’s one of those unforgettable encounters that reminds me why South Africa is such a special destination for nature photography enthusiasts.

Before leaving again, I’ve decided to reopen that archive and share with you the shots, locations, equipment, and preparations that will accompany me on this new adventure.

From today, a journey begins that will lead me to my departure. I’ll retrace some of the most significant moments of my first trip, share the places I’ll visit, the species I hope to encounter, and everything that goes into organizing a photography trip.

Giornata Mondiale della Fotografia

C'è un giorno, il 19 agosto, in cui il mondo si ferma a pensare a un gesto che facciamo quasi ogni giorno: guardare attraverso un obiettivo e fermare un istante per sempre. Da quasi due secoli, la fotografia porta con sé la stessa promessa: raccontare il mondo per come si mostra, quando nessuno lo disturba.

La fotografia non è mai solo tecnica, luce ed esposizione. È un linguaggio che sa commuovere, che sa aprire gli occhi su un volto, un gesto, un paesaggio che altrimenti resterebbero invisibili a chi non c'era. Ma è un linguaggio che chiede rispetto prima ancora che competenza. Che si tratti di un animale nel suo ambiente, di una persona colta in un momento di vita vera o di un luogo fragile e prezioso, ogni soggetto merita di essere avvicinato con cura, non inseguito per il like perfetto.

🌿 Per me fotografare ha sempre significato prima osservare, poi capire, e solo alla fine scattare. Non avvicinarsi troppo, non forzare un momento che non è mio da prendere, non disturbare per ottenere lo scatto. La pazienza è parte del mestiere tanto quanto il corpo macchina o l'obiettivo che si porta in spalla.

Perché la foto più bella non è solo quella che racconta meglio un momento, ma quella scattata senza disturbare, senza forzare, senza lasciare traccia del proprio passaggio.

🇬🇧 World Photography Day

There's a day, August 19th, when the world pauses to think about a gesture we do almost every day: looking through a lens and capturing a moment forever. For nearly two centuries, photography has carried with it the same promise: to tell the world as it appears, when no one disturbs it.

Photography is never just technique, light, and exposure. It's a language that can move, that can open eyes to a face, a gesture, a landscape that would otherwise remain invisible to those who weren't there. But it's a language that demands respect even before expertise. Whether it's an animal in its environment, a person captured in a real moment, or a fragile and precious place, every subject deserves to be approached with care, not chased for the perfect like.

🌿 For me, photography has always meant first observing, then understanding, and only then taking the shot. Don't get too close, don't force a moment that isn't mine to capture, don't disturb to get the shot. Patience is as much a part of the profession as the camera body or lens you carry.

Because the most beautiful photo isn't just the one that best captures a moment, but the one taken without disturbing, without forcing, without leaving a trace of its presence.

Manca poco alla partenza per il Sudafrica, e tra le tappe che aspetto con più curiosità c’è De Hoop, la più grande area protetta di fynbos costiero del Paese. Un angolo di Africa diverso da quello che si immagina di solito: niente savana, niente grandi felini, ma un paesaggio che si costruisce per contrasti.

Colline ricoperte di vegetazione bassa e fiorita si affacciano su un mare spesso mosso e cristallino. Non è raro incontrare un bontebok che osserva incuriosito, o un’antilope che attraversa lo stesso sentiero percorso da chi guarda il mare in cerca delle balene che ogni anno raggiungono queste acque per riprodursi.

🌿 È forse questo il fascino di De Hoop: non un’icona conosciuta a tutti, ma un luogo che si rivela piano, fatto di dettagli che si notano solo rallentando il passo. E allora, tra la valigia da preparare e l’attrezzatura da controllare, resta la stessa curiosità di sempre: quella per un’Africa che non finisce mai di sorprendere.

🇬🇧 Our departure for South Africa is almost here, and among the stops I’m most excited about is De Hoop, the country’s largest protected coastal fynbos area. It’s a corner of Africa unlike what you might imagine: no savannah, no big cats, but a landscape built through contrasts.

Hills covered in low, flowering vegetation overlook an often choppy, crystal-clear sea. It’s not uncommon to encounter a bontebok gazing curiously, or an antelope crossing the same path taken by those gazing out to sea in search of the whales that come to these waters every year to breed.

🌿 Perhaps this is the charm of De Hoop: not a universally known icon, but a place that reveals itself to be unhurried, made up of details that can only be noticed by slowing your pace. And so, between packing your suitcase and checking your equipment, the same curiosity remains: the curiosity for an Africa that never ceases to amaze.

Il Sudafrica 🇿🇦 ha un modo tutto suo di ribaltare le aspettative.

Chi immagina questo paese pensa quasi sempre ai grandi safari, ai leoni e agli elefanti del Kruger. Ma sulla costa atlantica del Capo Occidentale, tra la fine dell’inverno e l’inizio della primavera australe, la terra racconta una storia diversa: milioni di fiori esplodono all’improvviso e trasformano il paesaggio in un tappeto di colore che si perde all’orizzonte. Nella sezione di Postberg, aperta al pubblico solo in questo periodo, i fiori crescono spontanei tra affioramenti di granito, mentre eland, bontebok e zebre pascolano tranquilli in mezzo a queste distese.

🌿 Restare qui, in mezzo a questi colori, vuol dire ricordarsi che la natura non si programma: si osserva, si aspetta, e a volte si viene ripagati con uno spettacolo che dura solo poche settimane l’anno.

Ed è proprio in questi momenti, lontani dai soliti racconti, che questo paese riesce sempre a sorprendere chi crede di conoscerlo già.

🇬🇧 South Africa 🇿🇦 has a way of upending expectations.

Those who imagine this country almost always think of the great safaris, the lions and elephants of Kruger. But on the Atlantic coast of the Western Cape, between the end of winter and the beginning of austral spring, the land tells a different story: millions of flowers suddenly explode, transforming the landscape into a carpet of color that disappears into the horizon. In the Postberg section, open to the public only during this period, the flowers grow wild among granite outcrops, while eland, bontebok, and zebras graze peacefully among these expanses.

🌿 Staying here, amid these colors, means remembering that nature cannot be planned: you observe, you wait, and sometimes you are rewarded with a spectacle that lasts only a few weeks a year.

And it is precisely in these moments, far from the usual stories, that this country always manages to surprise those who think they already know it.

Deadvlei, Namibia.

Un bianco quasi accecante, il rosso delle dune e quegli alberi scuri che sembrano disegnati sul paesaggio. A Deadvlei tutto sembra fermo.

Eppure basta osservare meglio per trovare le tracce del tempo: nelle forme del terreno, nelle crepe, negli alberi che continuano a rimanere lì mentre il deserto cambia intorno a loro.

Un paesaggio essenziale, difficile da dimenticare.

An almost blinding white, the red of the dunes, and those dark trees that seem to be drawn on the landscape. In Deadvlei, everything seems still.

Yet, a closer look is enough to find traces of time: in the shapes of the land, in the cracks, in the trees that remain there while the desert changes around them.

An essential landscape, hard to forget.

Namibia 🇳🇦. Un piccolo angolo d’ombra nel mezzo di un’immensa distesa di sabbia. Sotto quell’albero, un orice. Intorno, le dune della Namibia che si perdono all’orizzonte.

Una scena fotografata durante un viaggio del 2010, quando la Namibia era uno dei primi paesi africani che avevo visitato.

Riguardandola oggi, mi colpisce ancora quel contrasto: un animale, un albero e un deserto immenso. Pochi elementi, ma sufficienti per raccontare quanto la vita sappia trovare il suo spazio anche qui.

A scene photographed during a trip in 2010, when Namibia was one of the first African countries I visited.

Looking back at it today, I’m still struck by that contrast: an animal, a tree, and an immense desert. Few elements, but enough to demonstrate how life can find its space here too.

C’è un animale che più di ogni altro è diventato il simbolo dell’Africa selvaggia: il leone.

Ma dietro la sua immagine potente c’è una realtà che conosciamo molto meno. I leoni oggi occupano una parte molto più piccola del loro antico areale e le loro popolazioni sono diminuite drasticamente. Perdita dell’habitat, conflitti con le comunità locali e riduzione delle prede sono alcune delle principali minacce alla loro sopravvivenza. Eppure, quando abbiamo la fortuna di incontrarne uno libero nella savana, tutto questo sembra per un attimo lontano.

Rimane solo l’animale.
 Il suo sguardo. 
La sua presenza.

La Giornata Mondiale del Leone è un’occasione per ricordare che queste immagini non devono diventare soltanto ricordi di un’Africa che fu.

Devono essere immagini di un’Africa che vogliamo continuare a vedere.

Happy World Lion Day 🦁.

-🇬🇧 There is one animal that more than any other has become the symbol of wild Africa: the lion.

But behind its powerful image lies a reality we know far less about. Lions today occupy a much smaller portion of their former range, and their populations have declined dramatically. Habitat loss, conflict with local communities, and a decline in prey are some of the main threats to their survival. Yet, when we are lucky enough to encounter one free in the savannah, all of this seems distant for a moment.

Only the animal remains.

His gaze.

His presence.

World Lion Day is an opportunity to remember that these images must not become mere memories of an Africa that once was.

They must be images of an Africa we want to continue to see.

L’Africa 🌍 ha un modo tutto suo di rallentare il tempo.

Sul Lago Awassa il tramonto non appartiene soltanto al cielo. Si riflette sull’acqua, accompagna il volo degli uccelli verso i rami del grande albero e scandisce il ritmo delle persone che si fermano lungo la riva. Per qualche istante ogni elemento trova il proprio posto, come se facesse parte dello stesso racconto.

È in momenti come questo che si comprende come un viaggio non sia fatto soltanto delle mete che si raggiungono, ma della capacità di osservare ciò che accade intorno. Perché l’essenza di un luogo raramente si trova nei suoi simboli più famosi: vive nella luce, nei gesti quotidiani e nell’armonia che lega natura e persone.

Per qualche minuto tutto sembra fermarsi. Ed è proprio in quell’equilibrio tra natura, luce e persone che questo luogo rivela la sua vera identità.

On Lake Awassa, the sunset doesn’t just belong to the sky. It reflects on the water, accompanies the flight of birds toward the branches of the great tree, and marks the rhythm of the people who stop along the shore. For a few moments, each element finds its place, as if part of the same story.

It’s in moments like this that we understand that a journey isn’t just about the destinations we reach, but about the ability to observe what happens around us. Because the essence of a place is rarely found in its most famous symbols: it lives in the light, in everyday gestures, and in the harmony that binds nature and people.

For a few minutes, everything seems to stop. And it is precisely in that balance between nature, light, and people that this place reveals its true identity.

I gelada hanno uno sguardo che difficilmente si dimentica.

Vivono solo sugli altopiani dell’Etiopia, tra praterie d’alta quota e pareti rocciose, dove trascorrono le giornate pascolando e le notti al sicuro sulle scogliere. Sono gli unici primati al mondo ad avere una dieta composta quasi esclusivamente da erba e la loro organizzazione sociale è tra le più affascinanti del regno animale.

Osservarli da vicino è stata una delle esperienze più intense del mio viaggio in Etiopia. Dietro quei lunghi mantelli e la caratteristica macchia rossa sul petto si nasconde un mondo fatto di gerarchie, comunicazione e sorprendenti comportamenti.

They live only in the Ethiopian highlands, among high-altitude grasslands and rocky cliffs, where they spend their days grazing and their nights sheltered on cliffs. They are the only primates in the world whose diet consists almost exclusively of grass, and their social organization is among the most fascinating in the animal kingdom.

Observing them up close was one of the most intense experiences of my trip to Ethiopia. Behind those long coats and the distinctive red spot on their chest lies a world of hierarchies, communication, and surprising behaviors.
