A Glencoe “just us” Elopement ⛰️

Katelyn & Chris decided to say yes to a lifetime of adventures together in Glencoe last week.

By saying “no” to the intensity of a full traditional wedding, they said “yes” to a quiet vow exchange and hand fasting in a woodland.

By saying “no” to the overwhelm and expense of a wedding, they said “yes” to the chaos and wild fun of traipsing around Scotland.

I’m not sure their plan included all seasons in one day, ending with a hailstorm, but that’s the beauty of eloping and taking whatever the day throws at you into your stride. And hey, that’s what marriage is all about.

I don’t often post decor pictures to the gram, but for yesterday’s prompt of “decor” (yes I’m a day behind), I thought back to Shane & Jill’s Tuscan wedding, and just how beautiful everything looked outdoors. Not a luxury the UK can guarantee, but there’s just something about natural light, the sunset, twilight and nighttime hitting those tables filled with beauty.

Oh man, when the tears start to flow at a wedding, I’m done. It’s always so wonderful when a couple create space within their ceremony to tune into their past, present and future and get a little teary eyed.

A few years ago at an LGBTQIA wedding, one of the readings was the Supreme Court Decision to enshrine same-sex marriage into law.

And at every LGBTQIA wedding I shoot, I’m reminded of how important it is to celebrate, honour, support and delight in the right of every person to marry who they want.

We all deserve the immense joy, and day to day wonderful banality of building a life together with the person we choose.

Even on the sunniest days, I’m an absolute sucker for black & white. And these frames from H&C’s elopement at Glenapp Castle show that I’m right to fall for a black & white edit every time.

It’s not often I post photos from family sessions on the grid, but with today’s prompt of “chosen family”, I just had to share these.

14 years ago, I lived in Georgia with the family you see in these pictures, and was hosted by another too.

This was before I was a photographer, before I was married, and before I had children.

Over the year I was there, we went from strangers to chosen family.

Since then, I had a wedding in their backyard, flown back to the states multiple times, and just recently had the joy of hosting them here in Scotland where they finally got to meet my kids, and I took these pictures.

There are now two families across the world that I hold as dear as my ‘real’ families, and I’m grateful every year our relationships continue.

So when I see my couples invite their chosen family to share in their weddings, and their lives I get it.

One of my favourite rituals on a wedding day, is when it’s just you and your mom.

Being raised by a single mom, this moment always gets me. Mostly because I think of all the times a mom gets her children dressed over the years, and what a privilege it must be to do it on their wedding day too.

I especially love it when the bride spends her wedding morning getting her kids ready. The ritual and cycle just continues…
