Ovada 02 June…when I read the awful news about what Israel is perpetrating in Gaza and again in Lebanon, I start to understand better about the troubling rise in antisemitism…each time there is mention of the odious Minister of Defense, Israel Katz, in the media, those persons less informed or predisposed to hate will conflate “Israel” the country with the decidedly jewish surname “Katz”…like the famous New York deli…this is how antisemitism flexes…I’m jewish, pro democracy and saddled with a jewish name…I’m anti war and pro human rights…ignorant racists and bigots, please don’t paint me with the same toxic brush you use to condemn the actions of Bibi and his corrupt regime…thank you 🙏
Ovada 02 giugno…quando ho letto le terribili notizie su ciò che Israele sta perpetrando a Gaza e poi in Libano, ho iniziato a capire meglio il preoccupante aumento dell'antisemitismo…ogni volta che i media menzionano l'odioso Ministro della Difesa, Israel Katz, le persone meno informate o predisposte all'odio confondono "Israele", il paese, con il cognome decisamente ebraico "Katz"…come il famoso deli di New York…è così che si manifesta l'antisemitismo…sono ebreo, a favore della democrazia e gravato da un nome ebraico…sono contro la guerra e a favore dei diritti umani…razzisti e bigotti ignoranti, per favore non dipingetemi con lo stesso pennello tossico che usate per condannare le azioni di Bibi e del suo regime corrotto…grazie 🙏

Ovada 20 May…today, I presented to the pharmacy, the digital prescription for my asthma inhaler…I was handed two originals(not generic)…I paid zero…as a permanent resident, I am enrolled in Italy’s national health system…I dutifully pay my (reasonable) taxes every year…if I need specialized care it is also covered…Italy has many problems(as everywhere does)…the very fact that worrying about healthcare costs is not the menacing dark cloud as it is in the U.S. allows me the freedom to enjoy my life…one filled with good friends, good food and wine and without the politics that divides red from blue in Trump’s vision of amerika…
Oggi, 20 maggio… ho presentato in farmacia la ricetta digitale per il mio inalatore per l'asma… mi hanno dato due originali (non generici)… non ho pagato nulla… in quanto residente permanente sono iscritto al sistema sanitario nazionale italiano… pago diligentemente le mie tasse (ragionevoli) ogni anno… se ho bisogno di cure specialistiche, anche queste sono coperte… l'Italia ha molti problemi (come ovunque)… il fatto stesso che la preoccupazione per i costi dell'assistenza sanitaria non sia la minacciosa nube nera come negli Stati Uniti mi dà la libertà di godermi la vita… una vita piena di buoni amici, buon cibo e vino e senza la politica che divide i rossi dai blu nella visione di Trump dell'America…

Vientiane, Laos 11 May…I’ve just lost my friend, Mike Boddington MBE…I write this, not because I’m feeling sadness for myself…I write this because we, you and I, lost a good man…one who dedicated his life to making the world a better place…through his efforts, less of us went hungry…through his determination, innocents who lost limbs to wars they did not want, were provided with new arms and legs and the support to help alleviate their suffering…now, at this moment in time, we need more like my friend Mike 🙏
Ventiane, Laos 11 maggio…ho appena perso il mio amico, Mike Boddington MBE…scrivo questo non perché provo tristezza per me stesso…scrivo questo perché noi, tu ed io, abbiamo perso un brav'uomo…uno che ha dedicato la sua vita a rendere il mondo un posto migliore…grazie ai suoi sforzi, meno persone hanno sofferto la fame…grazie alla sua determinazione, degli innocenti che avevano perso arti in guerre che non volevano, hanno ricevuto nuove braccia e gambe e il supporto necessario per alleviare le loro sofferenze…ora, in questo momento, abbiamo bisogno di più persone come il mio amico Mike 🙏

Ortigia 23 April…I’m not a student of history…oftentimes I wish I were…because we all need help to understand what is happening in the world…in the U.S. there is mad king donald, who has now upset the balance everywhere…it’s not right against left…it’s is right against wrong…normal people feel powerless…we wake in the morning and anxiously wonder what’s next…so we have a coffee and go about our day, trying to manage as best we can…the Hungarians voted to take back control of their lives…if there is an election(wherever) on the horizon, vote out all of these f**kers…only in a democracy do we have this power 💪
Ortigia 23 aprile…non sono un studente di storia…spesso vorrei esserlo…perché tutti abbiamo bisogno di aiuto per capire cosa sta succedendo nel mondo…negli stati uniti c'è il re pazzo Donald, che ora ha sconvolto l'equilibrio ovunque…non è destra contro sinistra…è giusto contro sbagliato…le persone normali si sentono impotenti…ci svegliamo la mattina e ci chiediamo con ansia cosa succederà dopo…quindi prendiamo un caffè e andiamo avanti con la nostra giornata, cercando di cavarcela al meglio… gli ungheresi hanno votato per riprendere il controllo delle loro vite…se ci sono elezioni (ovunque) all'orizzonte, votate via tutti questi stronzi…solo in una democrazia abbiamo questo potere 💪

Ortigia 12 April…I normally write about how fu**ed the world currently is…today, I lighten up to share something I just now experienced…I was sitting outside at my regular, morning coffee place…an elegantly dressed and well groomed gentleman asked to sit with me…already a bit weird…but he was so distinguished in appearance and demeanor that I invited him to sit…he introduced himself as Gianpiero from Venezia…he proceeded to tell me that he’d just gotten off a call with Georgia Meloni(our Prime Minister)…and, beginning tomorrow, he would be officially Prince of Ortigia…I made no reply…he then informed me that he was one of Italy’s great collectors of 20th century art…again, I made no reply…he then shared with me that his much younger girlfriend, a well respected surgeon and professor at the University of Chicago, had recently been voted most beautiful woman in America…no reply…he continued and, with a wink, told me that he’d just come from JFK airport in New York, where during a two hour layover, had made passionate love with the doctor…he then asked me for directions to a specific ATM because Banco San Paolo allowed him to withdraw unlimited funds without needing a card…I said nothing…he stood up, shook my hand and walked off…enjoy your Sunday…you’re welcome 😎

Ortigia, 12 aprile…Di solito scrivo di quanto sia fottuto il mondo in questo momento…oggi, mi alleggerisco per condividere qualcosa che ho appena vissuto…Ero seduto fuori nel mio solito bar del mattino…un signore elegantemente vestito e ben curato mi ha chiesto di sedersi con me…già un po' strano…ma era così distinto nell'aspetto e nel portamento che l'ho invitato a sedersi…si è presentato come Gianpiero da Venezia…ha continuato dicendomi che aveva appena finito una telefonata con Georgia Meloni (il nostro Primo Ministro)…e che, a partire da domani, sarebbe stato ufficialmente Principe di Ortigia…non ho risposto…poi mi ha informato di essere uno dei più grandi collezionisti italiani di arte del XX secolo…di nuovo, non ho risposto…poi mi ha raccontato che la sua fidanzata molto più giovane, una stimata chirurga e professoressa all'Università di Chicago, era stata recentemente eletta la donna più bella d'America…nessuna risposta…ha continuato e, con un occhiolino, mi ha detto che era appena tornato dall'aeroporto JFK di New York, dove durante un volo di due ore scalo, ho fatto l'amore appassionatamente con la dottoressa… poi mi ha chiesto indicazioni per un bancomat specifico perché Banco San Paolo gli permetteva di prelevare fondi illimitati senza carta… non ho detto nulla… si è alzato, mi ha stretto la mano e se n'è andato… ragazzi, buona domenica 😎

Ortigia 10 April…like most of you, I’m a bit confused by all of it…it, being the barrage of lies, violence and hate coming out of Washington…we won the war(really?)…vaccines are very, very bad, again…we’re so lucky that our national parks are loaded with yummy oil and minerals to eat…the Epstein thing is done and dusted…voting is bad and the media is a bunch of liars except when they say nice things about us, and…drumroll…Melania “I know nothing so buy my book.”…what am I missing?…FFS 😳

Ortigia April 07…Trump threatens that every bridge…every power plant in Iran will be decimated by 12 o’clock tonight…sitting in the Sicilian sun, I think about this as I enjoy my granita and brioche…what else to do?…what else can any of us do?…Iran and America…innocents both…with monstrous leadership who must be stopped before it’s too late 🌹

Ortigia April 06…Today is Pasquetta…Easter Monday, and it’s a holiday here in Italy…yesterday, I shopped for food, as I do everyday…I was shocked to see the price of fresh produce had jump suddenly and dramatically…I asked why and was told by the farmers in the market that they fear the price of petroleum and natural gas is about to skyrocket…as in the U. S., it’s time to plant and the cost of fertilizer is worrying everyone…Mr. Trump’s approval rating in Italy is almost half of what it was about a year ago, at 19 percent…Italian public opinion is strongly against the war in Iran…even Georgia Meloni, formerly a Trump ally, has turned on him…as Europeans, we resent the tone of the orange one’s messages…we, collectively, do not behave in this manner…and we won’t be saving up for that trip to New York or Las Vegas and will have to forget about those kicks on Route 66…how did the American people allow this monster back in for a second time?…that’s what I’m being asked…and I have no good answer 😟
Ortigia 6 aprile…Oggi è Pasquetta…Lunedì di Pasqua, ed è festa qui in Italia…Ieri ho fatto la spesa, come faccio tutti i giorni…Sono rimasta scioccata nel vedere che il prezzo dei prodotti freschi è aumentato improvvisamente e drasticamente…Ho chiesto il perché e i contadini al mercato mi hanno detto che temono che il prezzo del petrolio e del gas naturale stia per salire alle stelle…Come negli Stati Uniti, è tempo di seminare e il costo dei fertilizzanti preoccupa tutti…Sig. Il tasso di approvazione di Trump in Italia è quasi dimezzato rispetto a un anno fa, attestandosi al 19%... L'opinione pubblica italiana è fortemente contraria alla guerra in Iran... persino Georgia Meloni, un tempo alleata di Trump, gli si è rivoltata contro...noi europei non sopportiamo il tono dei messaggi dell'arancione...noi, collettivamente, non ci comportiamo in questo modo... e non metteremo da parte i soldi per quel viaggio a New York o a Las Vegas e dovremo rinunciare a quelle “kicks” sulla Route 66... come ha fatto il popolo americano a permettere a questo mostro di tornare al potere per la seconda volta?... questo è ciò che mi viene chiesto...E non ho una buona risposta 😟

Ortigia 05 March…Easter Sunday in Sicilia…spring has finally arrived and like clockwork…Orange has threatened to bomb the Iranian people back to the stone-age…Pentagon Pete, Secretary of War Crimes, declares a Christian holy war on all non-believers…it’s the new Crusades…Trump, punch drunk with power and swimming in crypto grift, just declared “Time is running out - 48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them. Glory be to GOD!"…how about…GOD help us all…buona Pasqua…happy Easter…don’t lose hope…good will eventually triumph over evil 🙏

Ortigia April 03…our world feels upside down…good is overwhelmed by bad…compassion is buried under a mountain of greed…lest we give in and give up, I present to you Corrado, my 90 year barber, who opens his shop everyday and quietly and meticulously plies his trade…everyone receives not only a haircut but, more importantly, a reminder that the world continues to spin and, in the end, grace always triumphs over evil…I wish all of you a joyous easter, passover and ramadan 🙏

Ortigia, 3 aprile…il nostro mondo sembra sottosopra…il bene è sopraffatto dal male…la compassione è sepolta sotto una montagna di avidità…perché non ci arrendiamo e non ci arrendiamo, vi presento Corrado, il mio barbiere di 90 anni, che apre il suo negozio ogni giorno e con calma e meticolosità esercita il suo mestiere…ognuno riceve non solo un taglio di capelli ma, cosa più importante, il promemoria che il mondo continua a girare e, alla fine, la grazia trionfa sempre sul male…Auguro a tutti voi una gioiosa Pasqua, Pesach e Ramadan 🙏
