Guillermo is a 55-year-old father and scientific researcher in electromagnetic energy at the Universidad Oriente in Santiago de Cuba. His monthly salary amounts to barely 35 euros.

In Cuba, where material scarcity is part of daily life, solidarity and resilience have become a way of surviving — and of living with dignity. Helping and sharing among those who have less is not an exception, but a cornerstone of the culture.

Guillermo hadn’t shaved in two years. In this photo, he finally does so — with the razors we brought him. What might seem like a small gesture is, in truth, a powerful symbol: of self-care regained, of human connection, and of the quiet strength with which Cubans face everyday challenges.

Journey among the Amazigh of Morocco

This reportage took me deep into the heart of Morocco, where the Amazigh people have lived for centuries between the Atlas mountains, the desert, and villages that seem untouched by time.

What struck me most were the contrasts: the vibrant colors of their clothing against the vast landscapes, the warmth of their hospitality in places where life can be harsh, and the way ancient traditions coexist with the slow arrival of modernity.

Through portraits, daily moments, and glimpses of their environment, I wanted to capture not just faces, but stories — stories of resilience, community, and pride in preserving an identity that has endured across generations.

This project is more than a collection of images: it’s a journey into memory, a celebration of culture, and a reminder of the strength that lies in staying connected to one’s roots.

Santa Rosalia, Palermo, by
On July 15th, Palermo renews its bond with the ‘Santuzza.’ After the spectacular celebrations of the previous evening, the city gathers in an atmosphere of devotion during the procession of Santa Rosalia’s relics. The silver urn, carried on the shoulders of the confraternity, makes its way through the historic center amid hymns, prayers, and flower petals thrown from balconies. Thousands of faithful follow the procession, surrounding the patron saint who, according to tradition, delivered Palermo from the plague of 1624. It is a moment of both intimate and collective faith, in which the city entrusts Rosalia with the memory of the miracle and its hopes for protection.

Santa Rosalia, Palermo, by
On July 14th, Palermo gathers for the Festino of Santa Rosalia, a celebration that blends faith, spectacle, and tradition. The Cassaro fills with lights, music, and crowds awaiting the triumphal cart as it makes its way through the city to the sea. The night ends with fireworks reflected on the water, a collective act of devotion. The festival recalls 1624, when the plague devastated Palermo: the discovery of Rosalia’s relics on Mount Pellegrino and their procession through the streets marked, according to tradition, the end of the epidemic. Since then, every year the people of Palermo honor the ‘Santuzza’ who delivered them from disease, turning the memory of that miracle into a night of faith and shared joy.

After the difficult period caused by Covid, Cuba has gone through a deep economic crisis that has affected every aspect of Cuban life.
During my stay, I had the opportunity to live closely with a typical Cuban family, trying to capture their daily life, their emotions, and the challenges they face every day.
Mother and daughter cross Santiago de Cuba’s Antonio Maceo Square, framed by the equestrian statue and the 23 iron steles evoking the Baraguá Protest.
Carrying an umbrella against the scorching heat, they make their way to Grandma’s house outside the city center.

At home with two of her daughters and Mercedes, aged 63, right, one of the neighbours. Mercedes often helps Dayana in looking after the girls when she's gone for the day. "I have age-related issues and I often need medicines, but I can't afford them," Mercedes says. The state is able to provide no medications as importing them in Cuba is nearly impossible due to the U.S. embargo.

Juliane, Dayana's first daughter, aged 14, sits at the door. Juliane shares the father with Julianis (not in the picture), aged 12, but not with Jimena, aged 5, who sits on the left.

Dayana is a 35-year-old woman from Santiago de Cuba, living in a 25-square-meter apartment in a courtyard shared by 17 families. She has three daughters—Juliane, 15, Julianis, 13, and Jimena, 6—born from two different relationships.

Cuba has been facing a worsening economic crisis, worsened by U.S. sanctions and the pandemic. Aged people like Mercedes receive nearly no attention from the state. Recently, Mercedes' cell phone got broken, triggering sadness. It was her only source of entertainment. .crestani3's project Dayana, The Eye of Cuba, was published on . Read more in our stories.

Dayana has no shower in her apartment. The government rations water, which comes every one or two weeks and it's stored in a big tank outside. That's why she has to shower Jimena with a watering can.
