Everything began on the night of September 1, 1730, when suddenly the earth started to tremble. Huge fissures opened up, fire began to gush and in a single night, under the restless whistling of the trade winds, the volcanoes were born. For six long years the bowels of the earth did not cease to stir, lava swallowed villages and cultivated fields, and entire communities were forced to run away, abandoning everything behind. The island’s fertile landscape vanished under a sea of incandescent rock. Chronicles of the time tell of a sky permanently darkened, rains of ash and a pale sun, as if painting an almost dystopian world— as though the island had suddenly decided to change its skin.
The land of Lanzarote holds the secrets of the catastrophic eruption of Timanfaya, an event that forever changed the island’s shape. Today its volcanoes stand as witnesses to deep wounds still open, and the lava fields rise on the horizon like immense scars. Constantly lashed by the winds, its skies are rich with clouds and color.
