When I portray people, it is myself I am looking at. It is a role-play. Actors live a character through their own skin; I look at myself through the skin of others. It is me beneath different faces, expressions and emotions. It is me who weeps, who laughs, me old and young, me detached, cold. Or me sunny, extroverted, me who wants to give myself to the world. A portrait is never about the other person; it is always about the part of me that wants to express itself through the other. It is a kind of egocentrism, but looking someone in the eye is also loving them and embracing oneself.
