The Dniester River marks the de facto border between Moldova and Transnistria. Within the Security Zone created after the 1992 conflict, Moldovan-administered communities remain on the Transnistrian side of a border shaped by a conflict that is still frozen today.

01 – Along the Dniester River, where local youth often gather for weekend picnics. In the photo, Costantino Purici, 30, smokes a ho**ah. “I like living here; I feel safe. Since the war in Ukraine began, there have been moments when this sense of security has felt more uncertain, making it difficult to think about the future. At one point, as the fighting approached southern Ukraine, there was a feeling that if Russian forces had reached Odesa, these villages, up to the bridge where Russian soldiers are stationed, would have been among the first to be taken.”

The Dniester River, marking the border between Moldova and Transnistria, flows through a fragmented landscape within the Security Zone established after the 1992 conflict, a history that remains unresolved to this day. Between checkpoints and territories shaped by an ongoing military presence, the landscape still carries traces of a suspended past.

All these images, taken last March within the Security Zone, were shot on expired film stock dating from before 1989. The film becomes a bridge between past and present: its chromatic shifts and imperfections are not defects, but an inseparable part of the photographs themselves, embedding time into the image and echoing an unresolved history.
