🚂 A PHOTOGRAPHER’S GUIDE TO THE BERNINA EXPRESS TRAIN👇🏼

✨ Spoiler alert ✨ Taking good photos on the Bernina Express Train is much harder than it looks!

BUT, there are some hacks that will help…

If you’re like me and have seen epic photos of scenic trains, especially the Bernina Express from Swizterland to Italy and dreamed of taking them yourself, read on for some tips before hopping on board 👇🏼

WHEN BOOKING:

🎟️ Class: Make sure you book into 1st class. This puts you in the first or second carriages with access to 3 small windows that open (one near the toilet of your carriage and two in between the carriages). This is how you get shots of the train as it curves over bridges & bends.

💺 Seat selection: For the journey from Chur - Tirano you’ll want to reserve seats on the right-hand side of the train. For the return journey, choose the left-hand side of the train. This gives you the best scenic views from your seat.

ON BOARD:

🎧 Use the ‘infotrainment’ map to see what landmarks are coming up and which way the train will be bending. Pick one of the open windows on the same side to the bend to get the best photo. So if the front of the train is curving around to the right, go to the right window - and vice versa. Shoot 📸 forwards until halfway across the bend and then switch and shoot backwards.

📸 Use a wide angle lens for capturing more of the scene. My pics are shot with a Z series 14-24mm f/2.8 which is a beast of a lens with minimal distortion even at 14mm.

📍Don’t forget to save this post for your trip on the Bernina Express.

THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE VISITING THIS BUCKET LIST PLACE 👇🏼

This is for my future self, and for anyone else planning a visit here or to a place that’s long been on their bucket list. 👇🏼

1. Plan time in your itinerary to visit more than once during your stay. I got sooo lucky with the weather on this morning, as another photographer told us every morning he had come here to shoot for the past week was foggy and the mountains were not visible. I spent a brief morning here to make the most of our one day in Switzerland, and it wasn’t nearly enough time to satisfy my excitement for the place I had long dreamed of visiting!

2. You can not and will not ever control the weather. I know it’s obvious, but it’s a good reminder. Sometimes things fall into place, like the weather in Lauterbrunnen did for me. But sometimes they don’t (for example we had to cancel the Dolomites due to weather). All you can do is hope & pray, watch the weather, be flexible where you can, and remember you can always come back another time. And in the case of less than ideal conditions, still find it within you to feel grateful that you got to experience it in the first place.

3. It’s okay to be excited. Sometimes it can be a case of building something up in your head and expectations not being equal to reality, but in the case of Lauterbrunnen and Staubbach Falls, the place absolutely blew my mind and was exactly what I thought it would be. The joy and excitement of finally ticking somewhere off your bucket list is, in my opinion, unmatched.

4. Just because it was “the plan” doesn’t mean you have to stick to it. We planned to visit here in the morning then scoot off to do other things. And when the weather was perfect and we were loving Lauterbrunnen, we still dashed off to try and do the next thing. In hindsight, we should have pivoted and stayed here to enjoy it for longer. Don’t be afraid to change the plan - check in with yourself and companions frequently with questions like; “are we enjoying ourselves here?” “Would we rather do x or y right now.” That way you’ll leave without regrets.

LITCHFIELD NATIONAL PARK YOU OUTDID YOURSELF.

Long on my list of places to see in - the is home to luscious waterfalls 😍

I’ll let these (very quickly & shabbily edited) photos do the talking / convincing as to why you should visit during or off the back of the wet season. BUT ALSO 👇🏼

Even though there’s ❌ no swimming (🐊🌊) during this time, I think you’ll agree these views make up for it!

I can’t believe I almost didn’t join this tour - more on that later - but man, am I glad I did!

Photo locations in order 👇🏼

📍Tolmer Falls
📍Wangi Falls
📍Florence Falls
📍The Castles, Batchelor
📍Termite Mounds
📍Tolmer Falls (again!)
📍Berry Springs Nature Park (not in Litchfield National Park, but reminds you we are in the tropics! 🌴)

WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT CAPTURING WHALES 🐋 FOR THE FIRST TIME 👇🏼

- It’s SO exhilarating, try to breathe and take a moment to calm yourself and think about the shots you’re taking. Adrenalin can take over!

- They swim REALLY quickly, so try to position the drone so that they’re coming towards you, not swimming away or you’ll be racing to catch up and potentially miss the shot.

- Lighting is very important, as it is with all photography, but the reflections on the water make it even more of a challenge, particularly for top-down shots. Try to combat this by going early in the morning before the sun is too high in the sky (I was there about 10.30/11am which is like the worst time haha).

‼️🚨 Please note this photo was taken for recreational purposes and in compliance with the regulations, the drone was more than 60m away from the whales. This photo is not for commercial use and reposting by for-profit companies is not permitted. 🚨‼️

📍Rocky Point, Cape Naturaliste WA 🇦🇺 (From now until about early December, hundreds of whales cruise past our coast on their way back to Antarctica, after breeding in the warmer waters up north. Spot them from this stretch of coast or join a whale watching tour to see them up close!)
