🔎 History 🔍
Crusa was founded, according to tradition, in 1315 BC, by the companions of Aeneas. In fact, during his long journey to the mouth of the Tiber, he landed with his fleet in the rades of the Trajes (or Illias), different names of the River Triumph. His subjects, in an act of devotion to the Prince, the first name that was assigned to him was Kreusa, the name of Aeneas' wife (to which the ending ia must be added: in fact he will become Kreusia, then Krusia and Crusìa, to change definitively, after the Unification of Italy, to the current name of Crosia).
It reached its peak between the 10th and 8th centuries. When it was annexed to the territory of Crotone, it became an important border center, precisely because of its strategic position, for the control of the port of Ilias. He welcomed the Sibarites, who were defeated after the battle against Crotone. Destroyed by a strong earthquake in 379, it was rebuilt on the top of the hill.
The Triumph, which touches the hill, was the scene of two important and violent battles: in 510 BC, between Sibarites and Crotoniates, in Strange, and later between Goths and Byzantines, in Caliò. During the feudal period, Crosia was the dominion of 33 feudal lords, among which the most important were the Matteo, the Cariati and the Sambiase. Under the rule of the feudal lord Teodoro Mandatoriccio, Crosia became a very coveted duchy and fief, disputed among the most powerful houses of the Kingdom of Naples.
Of all Crosia's past remains only a few memories, or some finds found. Crusa has regained its importance as a result of the so-called Marian apparitions, which took place in the Church of Our Lady of Mercy that, since May 23, 1987, have attracted the attention of many pilgrims, theologians and scientists.
