Ci sono pochi fotografi di cui amo l’uso della luce quasi alla follia. E Joe è uno di questi… averlo conosciuto e aver fatto cose con lui è stato uno dei momenti più belli della mia vita professionale.
At the workbench for . The background window is raw daylight, pouring through the window glass and a little smoke drift back there gives that sunlight shape and character.
The light for our subject at the desk is old school Nikon Speedlights, triggered line of sight. Three SB-910 units on a tri-flash, hitting a Manfrotto 3x3 diffuser. Instant soft light that has character and offers good detail for the subject and the work desk, but falls off naturally, and gradually.
This, for me, is a time honored approach. A face in a place. Environmental portraiture. The way you light a space like this offers clues to the life at hand, and actually entertains the eye of the viewer, letting them roam around a bit looking at details, and perhaps making some guesses as to what some of those details might be. Engagement, to use a word of our times. Spending more than one or two seconds, hopefully, with an image. Fun to create by using the light that’s available, and supplementing in a way that doesn’t squash the initial feel of the workplace.
The game of lighting ratios! What’s already there, and what do you supply that complements what you have found?
