Maybe it is because of the covid-19 pandemic, which makes it extra rewarding to be able to travel again. Maybe it is because I haven’t been able to visit my beloved Cuba for one and a half year. Maybe it is because I needed a break of my life behind a computer, trying to make a living as a photographer -a paradox in itself, but unfortunately the other side of the coin-. Anyway, I loved the past two weeks in Sicily so much. The heat, the informal street culture in cities like Palermo and Catania, the peeling painted houses and close to Caribbean beaches like Fontana Biancha. Within Europe, I cannot imagine a place more similar to Cuba than Sicily. This morning we had a stroll at the Catanian fish market, before flying back over the Etna, to our Dutch calm and green street in Arnhem. Feeling lucky today. ©SanneDerks2021

In today's print version of the New York Times came out my story on Cuba's vast network of workers and their efforts to keep the drinking water clean. So grateful that my project Manifiesto del Agua found its way into the world. Back in 2017 already I got intrigued by Cuba's daily struggle for clean drinking water but also discovered that following the water would lead to a cross-section of contemporary communist Cuba. In the following years I turned it into a long-term project in which I am following different workers involved in guaranteeing clean potable water. Very happy and honoured to see it in print in a medium I highly admire.

The work is funded by the Dutch Fund for In-depth Journalism and the Anna Cornelis Fund for Documentary Photographers. Since I am planning to turn it into my first photo book, will continue this project. Very excited for having the opportunity to show that clean drinking water cannot be taken for granted and learning from the inventive Cubans to always look for solutions. A big thanks to all wonderful reactions I have received after this publication. Truely uplifting and grateful.
