Most people know Vis as the island where Mamma Mia! was filmed. I know it as the island where Brian absolutely nailed a proposal!

For weeks, Brian and I exchanged emails, planned locations, discussed timing, backup plans, and all the tiny details that nobody sees when they look at the final photos.

As part of their Croatian island-hopping adventure, Brian and Malea had already explored some of the most beautiful corners of Dalmatia. But when it came to choosing the spot for the big question, we picked Vis.

Because Vis does something magical. Time slows down there. It becomes less about schedules and notifications, and more about listening to the waves lazily rolling onto the shore, watching boats drift through the harbour, and hearing seagulls passionately arguing about absolutely everything.

It’s peaceful. Charming as heck. And just private enough for a life-changing question.

Now, I still don’t know exactly how Brian convinced Malea to walk all the way to the green lighthouse. My suggestion was simple: “Tell her the view is beautiful and she should take some selfies there.”

Whatever strategy he used… it worked. It worked perfectly. One moment they were strolling along the waterfront. The next, Brian was down on one knee.

And Malea? Completely surprised. Well… mostly surprised. 😏 Because deep down, she was secretly hoping the question was coming.
And honestly, after spending time with them, it’s not hard to understand why.

Some couples just fit.
They bring out the best in one another. They balance each other beautifully. They make life look lighter, easier, and a whole lot more fun.

And afterwards, we wandered through the little stone streets of Vis while Malea admired her new sparkly accessory approximately every seventeen seconds. 😂

And the best part was that the entire town seemed genuinely excited for them.

For one afternoon, Vis wasn’t just famous for a movie. It became the place where a new chapter began.

Sundays are for family dinners. And good dinners are basically the beating heart of every Italian wedding.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Honestly, food is one of the reasons I got married in Italy too. Which resulted with a very strategic decision of choosing a wedding dress with a corset back, so we could keep loosening it as we progressed through the four-course meal. A bride plans ahead! 😂
But this post is not about me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It is about a couple who travelled 4,000 miles from Maine to Orvieto to embrace the beauty of an Italian wedding in its full glory: views, family, the slow pace, wine, the laughter, and most importantly… the food.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So naturally, when the second course arrived, I stole them away for a few minutes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Just the two of them. Two plates of gnocchi. Two very necessary bibs. And one tiny private dinner moment in the middle of their wedding day.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because yes, wedding portraits are important.
But brides gotta eat.Grooms gotta eat.And in Italy, love is absolutely allowed to come with carbs. 🍝

One whole year of these two!!
Happy first anniversary to you Ang & Soch!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Everything about their day in Sevilla was epic: the old walls, the palms, the long dinner tables, the music, the food, crazy dancing… Every little piece felt so perfectly them.
But my favorite part will always be the way they looked at each other.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One year ago, this was the beginning of their forever. And today, I know they are celebrating not only the wedding day, but everything they have built since. And not just as two anymore, but as three...

The moment a little ladybug landed on Erin’s shoulder, I think all of us knew this weekend was going to be blessed in the best way possible.

Maybe by luck. Maybe by love.
Or maybe by the grandparents watching over them from somewhere above the hills of Orvieto, smiling proudly at the life Erin and Nick are building together.

Their wedding weekend began with epic views, warm sunset light, and little touches of red in every corner. Aperol spritzes glowing in the sun, Peroni bottles clinking against laughter, pizzas arriving fresh from the oven faster than anyone could count, and tambourines slowly making their way onto the dance floor.

One of my favorite moments was watching Erin and Nick put on their handmade Orvieto aprons and serve gelato to the people they love most. No posing, no performance whatsoever. Just two people fully present, handing out scoops, smiles, and joy to the people they love the most.

And as the evening disappeared into warm Umbrian twilight, I kept thinking about that tiny ladybug from the beginning of the afternoon, and how I was witnessing something deeply special long before the vows even began.

I entered the room and got hit by a wave of laughter before I even saw anyone properly.
Bridesmaids everywhere. Makeup brushes flying through the air and hair sprays fully committed to their John Travolta Saturday Night Fever era.
And for one tiny second… I panicked!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As someone who loves minimalism and clean spaces, I looked around thinking:
What exactly am I going to do here?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We ako know that wedding mornings are beautiful chaos.
Hairpins multiply like rabbits. Half the room becomes a Sephora counter. Someone is always sitting on the floor. And somehow every single surface disappears under products.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So I stopped.
Did a little 360 around the room.
And instantly knew, these two corners!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That emerald vintage sofa wrapped in the soft window light, & the dreamy wallpaper corner with the vintage chair.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One thing the vride told me earlier was that she didn’t really love photos of herself smiling. Which, honestly, immediately became my personal challenge. 😄
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Not because I wanted forced smiles or fake “say cheese” moments. Absolutely not!
But because I wanted her to see what everyone else already sees.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That her happiest smile is gorgeous!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This first image became one of my favorite frames from the entire day because of that. And I think it says something so important:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our “imperfections” are often only visible to us.
Meanwhile, the rest of the world is quietly loving all the things we try to hide.

Cyprus was never just another destination for me.

It was my first real “home away from home”. The island where I learned independence, where I grew up in ways no one really prepares you for, and where my photography stopped feeling like a dream to achieve, and started becoming a way of life.

And somehow, Columbia Beach Resort became one of the places on the island that held so much of that story.

I photographed my very first wedding in Cyprus right there, back in 2014, and I still remember standing on those lawns thinking: imagine doing weddings like this all the time!

So having recently documented this beautiful celebration, so thoughtfully planned by , felt like one of those full-circle moments I wish my younger self could have seen. I bet she’d be proud! 😌

What always stayed with me about Columbia isn’t just the pretty view. It’s the feeling of the place. The way the resort quietly blends into the landscape of Pissouri Bay instead of trying to overpower it. The stone architecture inspired by traditional Cypriot villages, the palm gardens, the delicious food that stretch slowly into warm Mediterranean evenings…
It felt elegant without pretending to be something else.

Cyprus was, and always will be, my island.

TRANSFORMATION.
I think about this word a lot in the context of weddings.

Being split between two continents, I document many celebrations where the transformation of spaces and ballrooms is often seen as the ultimate goal of the day. And sometimes, that’s exactly what’s needed.
But not always.

In a time where we desire to slow down, return to analogue, and appreciate what feels real and organic, I think this same desire applies to how we approach spaces too: not every venue needs to become something else.
Some simply need to be understood first.

And we, as creatives, need to slow down enough to really see what is already there.
The textures. The existing palette. The structure. The feeling a place carries before anything is added.

The bigger role is to respect it and build on what already exists. To enhance rather than overwrite. To create something that feels connected to the space, not placed on top of it.
That’s what stood out to me at Ettington Park Hotel.

The architecture already does so much of the work. The depth of the stone and brick, the weight of the space balanced with the softness of the English countryside… it already tells its own story.
And because of that, it doesn’t ask to be completely transformed.
This is something I’ve become very intentional about in my work.

Before I photograph, I observe. I look at the structure, the materials, the light, and the details most people might pass by. Because those details quietly guide every decision that comes after.
Where to place the couple.
How much to add.
What to leave untouched.
When to step in, and when to let the space speak.

This is where the real work begins. Not in changing everything. But in seeing what is already there, and knowing how to make it feel even more intentional.

You don’t pay a photographer to take photos.
You pay them to see.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That is something I said to my bride yesterday, and it stayed with me, because I think it explains so much about the way I approach destination wedding photography.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Wherever I travel, I don’t just look for “pretty spots.” I try to understand the place first. I study it, before I ever photograph people in it. I pay attention to its textures, colors and the way it holds light throughout the day. I want to understand what makes that destination feel like itself, and what kind of atmosphere it carries before people step into the frame.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At Hearst Castle in California, I found myself doing exactly that - it was one of those places that made me stop and really look.

Its architecture, history, grandeur, and those incredible cinematic views over the Central Coast reminded me that destination wedding photography is never just about arriving with a camera. It is about understanding a place deeply enough to let it become part of the story.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That matters so much for weddings, especially in places with a strong visual identity, and California is certainly one of them!

A wedding is not only about the people in it, but also about the atmosphere surrounding them.
This is why I will always arrive curious and ready to explore.
I will always look a little longer, walk a little further, and pay attention to the details others might miss, because the destination is never just a backdrop. It is part of the memory itself and part of the mood.

And maybe that is the heart of it:
You are not paying me to photograph your wedding.
You are trusting me to see it fully.

Lana and Alexa. Alexa and Lana.
Like Aperol Spritz. Strong on their own, but even more powerful together.

Over the years, they have built so much more than beautiful events and industry moments. They have created spaces where wedding professionals can grow, connect, discover opportunities, and be genuinely seen.

So when they announced the .global Awards, I was excited. Not because this industry needs more trophies on shelves, but because it needs more recognition with real weight behind it. The kind that doesn’t polish egos, but celebrates consistency, contribution, and heart.

Going through the application made me dig back through years of work, places, projects, talks, workshops, long flights, long edit nights, quiet wins, loud lessons, and all the ways I’ve tried to contribute to this industry beyond just showing up with a camera.

And in that process, I had a moment with myself.
A reminder that I am not “just” a wedding photographer.
But a wedding fanatic.
A seeker of beauty.
A storyteller.
A curious mind that still wants to explore more, learn more, do better.
A person who cares deeply not only about creating beautiful work, but about lifting the industry and encouraging the people inside it.

Winning the WEMA Circle Award for Best Destination Lens 2025 feels special, especially because it made me pause long enough to truly see the road behind me. And when I look back, I think of young Martina starting out many years ago, when the world and this industry looked very different. Maybe that is exactly why this means so much to me, because it is not just about where I am today, but about everything in the last 14 years it took to get here.

Sadly, I couldn’t be there for the gala night and the FOMO was huge. But amazing .film video called me from the event and accepted the award on my behalf. That is real friendship. People who clap for you in rooms you cannot be in.

Thank you, Lana and Alexa, for creating something so meaningful and doing it with heart.

And thank you to every couple, planner, fellow creative, student, and kind soul who has been part of this journey.
This award may have my name on it, but it carries pieces of all of you, too.
