La dea Afrodite, simbolo di amore, bellezza e fecondità, prende il nome dal greco “aphros” (ἀφρός), che significa “spuma”, in riferimento al mito della sua nascita. Secondo la Teogonia di Esiodo, Afrodite emerse dalla schiuma del mare, formata dal seme di Urano gettato nelle acque dopo essere stato evirato dal figlio Crono. Dalla spuma nacque la dea, che raggiunse a nuoto l’isola di Citera, guadagnandosi così l’epiteto di “Afrogenea”, ossia “nata dalla spuma”.

The goddess Aphrodite, symbol of love, beauty, and fertility, takes her name from the Greek word “aphros” (ἀφρός), meaning “foam,” referring to the myth of her birth. According to Hesiod’s Theogony, Aphrodite emerged from the sea foam formed by the seed of Uranus, cast into the waters after being castrated by his son Cronus. From the foam, the goddess was born and swam to the island of Cythera, earning the epithet “Aphrogena,” meaning “born from foam.”
