Today I’m sharing with you some images from Altera Italia relating to spring rituals, particularly those centred on trees: my project explores and seeks to restore ritual culture as an autonomous and legitimate culture, not one that is subordinate to other paradigms.

Through these rituals, Altera Italia aims to establish the South as a distinct entity in its own right, rather than a ‘folkloric and subordinate’ culture, as it is often described and portrayed.

Hello, I’m Alessia Rollo and I’m a documentary photographer and visual artist.

Today I’d like to present my series “Altera Italia”, a project I undertook in Southern Italy to try to capture the complexity of this region’s story.

Here you can see a selection of images relating to winter rituals, which I began exploring in 2019!

The work seeks to explore cultural aspects of the South, starting with the syncretic rituals that still endure today.
Fire, bells and masks are recurring symbols in these rituals, revealing the symbolism behind winter: the symbolic death that heralds the arrival of spring.

La fotografia di Francien Scheen .appeltjes lavora sul confine sottile tra realtà e riflesso, fino a trasformare il visibile in qualcosa di quasi liquido. Finalista al National Geographic 2021, Francien descrive il suo lavoro di riflessione come “one click and zero manipulations”, e questa attenzione al reale attraversa tutta la sua ricerca.

La selezione è tutta attraversata dal colore, che non serve a descrivere ma a espandere la percezione. Toni, sovrapposizioni e trasparenze costruiscono immagini sospese, dove la strada diventa un campo di possibilità visive e il quotidiano si apre a una dimensione più poetica e inattesa.

È una street photography che non si limita a registrare ciò che accade, ma costruisce un linguaggio personale, riconoscibile, fatto di intuizione, attesa e coincidenza. In questo senso, ogni fotogramma sembra nascere da un dialogo continuo tra ciò che è davanti all’obiettivo e ciò che si riflette dentro di esso.

The photography of Francien Scheen .appeltjes works on the thin border between reality and reflection, turning the visible into something almost liquid. A finalist in National Geographic 2021, Francien describes her reflection work as “one click and zero manipulations,” and this attention to the real runs through her practice.

This selection is entirely driven by color, which does not simply describe but expands perception. Tones, overlaps, and transparencies build suspended images where the street becomes a field of visual possibilities and the everyday opens into a more poetic and unexpected dimension.

This is street photography that does not merely record what happens, but builds a personal and recognizable language, made of intuition, waiting, and coincidence. In this sense, each frame seems to emerge from an ongoing dialogue between what stands before the lens and what is reflected within it.

La selezione in bianco e nero è solo una delle tante direzioni del lavoro di Debrani Das , fotografa di Kolkata. Nel suo sguardo convivono attenzione per il quotidiano, sensibilità per la presenza umana e una forte inclinazione a trasformare il reale in immagine poetica.

In queste fotografie in bianco e nero, il tono diventa più essenziale e meditativo: la materia del mondo si riduce a luce, ombra, forma e respiro. È un linguaggio che le permette di spostare la street photography verso una dimensione quasi sospesa, dove ogni figura sembra emergere con delicatezza dal fondo della scena.

Debrani ha raccontato che la street photography è entrata nella sua vita nel 2016 e che per lei è un modo per dare voce a ciò che sente e osserva nelle strade. La sua è una visione chiara e personale, capace di attraversare il bianco e nero senza perdere calore, e di farne un territorio espressivo coerente e poetico.

The black-and-white selection is just one thread of Debrani Das’s work, the Kolkata-based photographer. In her gaze, attention to everyday life, sensitivity to human presence, and a strong inclination to turn reality into poetic imagery all coexist.

In these black-and-white potographs, the tone becomes more essential and meditative: the material of the world is reduced to light, shadow, shape, and breath. It is a language that allows her to move street photography toward an almost suspended dimension, where each figure seems to emerge gently from the background.

Debrani has said that street photography entered her life in 2016 and that, for her, it is a way to give voice to what she feels and observes in the streets. Her vision is clear and personal, able to move through black and white without losing warmth, and to make it a coherent and poetic expressive territory.

C’è una forte dimensione pittorica nella fotografia di Nadia Eeckhout .eeckhout4 (Belgio). Prima di affidarsi alla macchina fotografica, Nadia esplorava le storie umane attraverso la scrittura e il pennello, un’eredità visibile nella grana delle sue inquadrature. Nelle sue immagini, catturate quasi esclusivamente attraverso vetri e finestre, i volti non sono mai semplicemente descritti, ma appaiono dissolti, sospesi tra interno ed esterno.

Come se fluttuassero nell’acqua, le figure umane si mescolano ai riflessi della strada, alla luce e alla pioggia, creando composizioni fluide e malinconiche. È una street photography con una voce precisa, silenziosa e profondamente poetica: un rifugio visivo in cui il caos urbano si ferma e si trasforma in un racconto intimo.

There is a strong pictorial dimension in the photography of Nadia Eeckhout .eeckhout4 (Belgium). Before turning to the camera, Nadia explored human stories through writing and painting, an inheritance visible in the texture of her frames. In her images, captured almost exclusively through glass and windows, faces are never simply described but appear dissolved, suspended between inside and outside.

As if floating in water, human figures merge with street reflections, light, and rain, creating fluid and melancholic compositions. It is a street photography with a precise, quiet, and deeply poetic voice: a visual refuge where urban chaos pauses and transforms into an intimate narrative.

Cofondatrice di , Marie-Josée utilizza la macchina fotografica come uno strumento di esplorazione visiva, capace di passare con naturalezza dall’astrazione all’ironia del quotidiano.

Un filone centrale della sua ricerca è il gioco di rifrazioni, ombre e luci, che in questa selezione esplode in atmosfere saturate e dominate dalle tonalità ipnotiche del rosso. Un colore che trasforma lo spazio urbano in un territorio sensoriale ed emotivo. Eppure, il suo sguardo sa anche posarsi con leggerezza sulle situazioni più ordinarie, cogliendo quei paradossi visivi in cui la strada si rivela come un palcoscenico inaspettato e divertente.

The photography of Marie-Josée Gouëz-Dailey does not stop at the surface of things but seeks the magic and coincidences hidden in the folds of reality. Co-founder of Women In Street France, Marie-Josée uses the camera as a tool for visual exploration, capable of shifting naturally from abstraction to the irony of the everyday.

A central thread of her research is the play of refractions, shadows, and light, which in this selection explodes into saturated atmospheres dominated by the hypnotic tones of red. A color that transforms the urban space into a sensory and emotional territory. Yet, her gaze also knows how to rest lightly on the most ordinary situations, capturing those visual paradoxes where the street reveals itself as an unexpected and amusing stage.
