The Testa Di Moro (Moorish Head) is a symbol of luck found across Sicily, often displayed as a pair, representing themes of love, passion, betrayal, and revenge.

The story is of a young Sicilian girl who fell in love with a visiting Moor from northern Africa. They fell in love, until he told her that he would soon need to return to his family and country.

She waited until her lover was asleep and cut off his head, which she kept as a vase for her balcony to grow basil.

The girl watered the plant with her tears, and as time passed, the basil grew lush and fragrant.

As people would walk by her balcony, they began to become jealous of her thriving basil, and so they began creating colorful vases with clay heads.
