Join me this Saturday afternoon for a cup of chai & gallery walkthrough at The ArtsCenter.
This gathering is a fantastic opportunity to delve deeper into the artistic process, pose your questions about expedition photography, & learn about the inspiration behind images on display in dual exhibitions at the venue. Uncover aesthetic beauty & cultural significance in rare glimpses of Iran, while indulging in a selection of Persian chai & herbal teas.

Limited archival prints, calligraphy books with original miniature paintings, & an omnium gatherum of teas will be available for patrons. The event is free & open to the public.

Two distinct collections of photography are on display in the Sweet Bay & Theater galleries:
NO FRIENDS BUT THE MOUNTAINS provides a glimpse into the daily lives of Kurdish people in the namesake mountainous Kurdistan Province, where untamed landscapes are dotted by stepped villages, home to a unique culture, heritage, & language that has been preserved for centuries. These images are the result of long-term photographic expeditions in 2023.
RESTLESS ANAHITA is a kaleidoscopic journey through the fabric of female clothing in remote corners of Iran. The photographs are a variegated, parti-colored passage through the rainbow of traditional garb in my motherland. Highlighting garments from the northwest mountains of Gilan, to the sun-kissed islands of south-central Hormozgan, these images pay homage to our mothers, sisters, and daughters.

Dear Friends and Patrons,
I would like to cordially invite you to the following dual exhibitions. Two distinct collections of photography, NO FRIENDS BUT THE MOUNTAINS and RESTLESS ANAHITA are continuing bodies of work. Each showcases different aspects of traditional worlds in the Middle East.

NO FRIENDS BUT THE MOUNTAINS provides a glimpse into the daily lives of Kurdish people in the namesake mountainous Kurdistan Province, where untamed landscapes are dotted by stepped villages, home to a unique culture, heritage, and language that has been preserved for centuries. These images are the result of long-term photographic expeditions in 2023.

RESTLESS ANAHITA is a kaleidoscopic journey through the fabric of female clothing in remote corners of Iran. The photographs are a variegated, parti-colored passage through the rainbow of traditional garb in my motherland. Highlighting garments from the northwest mountains of Gilan, to the sun-kissed islands of south-central Hormozgan, these images pay homage to our mothers, sisters, and daughters.

The collections of images will be on display in two galleries at Alamance Arts in Graham, NC, from May 30th thru July 1st, 2024: Picasso's Gallery, and the Patrick and Rhyne Sister Galleries.

Shiraz is one of the most enchanting cities in Iran, chock-full of architectural, cultural, and spiritual marvels. It is known throughout Iran as the city of poets, literature, and flowers.
The most famous of these bards is Khwāje Shams-od-Dīn Mohammad Hāfez-e Shīrāzī (1325-1390), known by his pen name, Hafiz/Hafez. His works are globally considered as some of the best examples of Persian poetry.
The image above was captured in one of my favorite places in the city, known as the Pink Mosque. Early in the morning, the sun shines through seven large stained glass windows in the prayer hall, basking pilgrims and visitors in a kaleidoscope of light.

The Shabestan (night prayer hall) of the Vakil Mosque, one of the finest examples of Zand Dynasty architecture in Iran. Somehow no matter what time of day I snapped my images here, the light seemed to be perfect.

In the somnolent port town of Bandar Kong, the fishing fleet takes to sea at sunset, and returns at dawn the following day. This is a workaround to beat the stifling heat and humidity. Here, fishermen prepare for another journey into the heart of the Persian Gulf, seeking the bounty that has sustained their way of life for centuries. Now more than ever, overfishing, climate change, and the needs of burgeoning populations in neighboring countries is a concern, and a delicate balance has to be struck between quotas and conservation so future generations can experience the benefits of these emerald waters.

One of the crown jewels in the treasure trove of natural sites on Qeshm is Chahkooh (چاهکوه) Canyon, a few kilometer hike from the coastal road that circles the island. This breathtaking site lies dormant during the hotter seasons, & almost invariably at dawn all year round.

The red dirt of Hormuz Island is surreal in its vibrancy. And any extended walk along the famed Red Beach and surrounding hills all but guarantees that every nook and cranny of anything you may be wearing or carrying is stained in the iron oxide rich crimson hues of this tiny bit of heaven.

Exploring the winding alleyways of the ancient desert city of Yazd, accompanied only by my plans for upcoming adventures in distant corners of my motherland.
These corridors are known as 'Ashtikonan', loosely translated to friendship alley, the idea being that they are so narrow, if you were to encounter somebody else you would inevitably brush up against them, and would therefore have to be friends, or put aside your differences.

For I would like to share these images from my recent journey to one of the most arid spots in the middle east. Deep in the heart of Iran lies the Great Salt Desert, covering an area over 77,600 km² (30,000 sq mi). The central region is dotted with salt flats, which animals & humans have been using for centuries. With industrialization in the early 20th century came mechanized harvesting and transportation methods, which continue to this day. These Mercedes trucks, while decades-old, seem to be the preferred vehicles for the salters, trusty gasoline powered beasts of burden replacing the camels of yore.

This week is of great spiritual & religious significance throughout the Islamic world. It is marked by the two holy days of Tasu’a & Ashura, which commemorate the siege of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, & his subsequent martyrdom along with his supporters at the Battle of Karbala. Ashura is also a major occasion for pilgrimage in Shia Islam. This image is from a re-enactment near the Grand Bazaar in Tehran.
