Marks of Belonging

Local tattoos have always fascinated me. They are rarely perfect or symmetrical, and perhaps that is what gives them their character. The fading ink, uneven lines and imperfections carry a beauty of their own and, more importantly, a story.

Across India, tattoo traditions vary from person to person, community to community, and often from one way of life to another. In this series, I document the tattoos of fishermen along the southern coast of India, predominantly from the Latin Catholic fishing communities. A tattoo might carry their faith, their name, the name of their boat, or even the name of a favourite footballer.

Who Dares to Walk With Whom?

They call us majestic,
they call us gentle,
they place us beside gods
and walk us through the streets.

But who chose this journey?

You walk beside us,
we carry your traditions,
your colours, your celebrations,
your gods.

Yet we belong to the forest
to silence, rain and earth,
not to the noise of your devotion.

Perhaps the question was never
who dares to walk with whom,
but why one must walk
where the other was born to roam.

Onam celebrates Mahabali, the king remembered for a Kerala built on equality, prosperity and abundance and the beginning of the harvest season. Perhaps today is a good time to look back at those values and ask how we can bring them into the Kerala of tomorrow. We may have become a consumer-driven society, importing much of what we once grew ourselves, but the spirit of Onam can remind us to reconnect with our land, support local farmers and value what we produce.

It was a completely random plan to step out and wander through familiar streets again with V I S H N U G O P A L Somewhere along the way, we bumped into another photographer, Sunaid Habeeb. Art has its own language, we instantly connected.

They went out to sea at around 4 a.m. By afternoon, they were still on shore, painfully pulling plastic, clothes, diapers, sanitary pads and other waste from their fishing nets. Much of it, they said, flows from the backwaters into the sea during the monsoon. A damaged net can mean losing an entire day’s income for families who live from one catch to the next.

What struck me was the cruel cycle: after struggling for hours to save their nets, they had nowhere to dispose of the waste except burying it in the sand—where the ocean will eventually take it back. The fishermen depend on the sea for their livelihood, yet they are forced to pay the price for the waste we send into it. How long can we continue treating the ocean as our last drain?
