Peeping cautiously from behind a leaf, this curious little Jumping spider (Carrhotus sp.) kept scanning her surroundings before pausing to look straight at me... almost as if she was trying to understand the person behind the lens.

A delightful glimpse into the alert and expressive world of jumping spiders. 🕷️🍃

A nursery guarded by ants ... and paid for in sugar.

At first glance, this may look like a raid. Large carpenter ants surround a group of horned treehoppers, while rows of pale, rice-like eggs lie exposed along the plant stem. But what appears to be an attack is most likely an extraordinary alliance.

The treehoppers pierce the stem and feed on plant sap. In the process, they produce honeydew - a sugary liquid eagerly collected by the ants. In exchange for this reliable source of food, the ants patrol the treehopper colony and aggressively confront potential predators and parasitoids.

The eggs themselves do not produce honeydew, but the attending adults - and later the newly hatched, sap-feeding nymphs - help sustain this relationship. Their ant bodyguards can therefore provide an added layer of protection during the treehoppers’ most vulnerable stages.

Two very different insects, brought together by a simple exchange: sweetness for security.

No contracts. No commands. Just an intricate partnership unfolding on a single plant stem - almost invisible unless we pause and look closely.

A beautiful encounter with the striking Black-and-red Broadbill. A steady setup makes all the difference when filming these fleeting moments in nature. That's the Leofoto Ranger LS-324C I am using.

A quiet giant at the mirror of the night.

The Cape buffalo lowered its head to drink, its horns curving through the darkness while its reflection waited silently below. Behind it, faint wings moved like ghosts—brief traces of life in the stillness.

Power above, silence beneath, and between them a single sip from the night.

Shompole, Kenya.

Drawn from the blue of night, a waterbuck bends towards its reflection.

Its form dissolves into soft lines of movement, while one watchful eye remains anchored in the moment. Between stillness and motion, the familiar becomes almost dreamlike - a quiet presence emerging from the darkness.

For a fleeting instant, the water seemed to hold both the animal and its echo.

Shompole, Kenya.

The night broke into a thousand silver stars.

With one sudden movement, the giraffe sent water dancing through the darkness - each droplet catching the light before disappearing again. Below, its reflection held the same fleeting burst, as though the night had opened twice.

A brief moment of movement, light and wonder at the water’s edge.

Shompole, Kenya.

A pale flame moving through the darkness.

The white-tailed mongoose slipped quietly across the night, its luminous tail trailing behind like a brushstroke of moonlight. Dust rose softly in its wake, while tiny wings shimmered above like scattered stars.

For a fleeting moment, the unseen world of the night stepped into the light - and then disappeared once more.

Shompole, Kenya.

A whisper of wings in the stillness of the night.

For a fleeting moment, the bird seemed to leave an echo of itself behind - a delicate trace of movement suspended between darkness and light. One moment became many, softly layered together before vanishing into the night.

At the water’s edge in Shompole, even the briefest visitor can leave a lingering memory.

Out of the darkness, a Cape buffalo approaches the water.

Its powerful structure is revealed only by a thin outline of light, while the dust hanging in the air adds to the mystery of the moment. The reflection below completes the scene... quiet, dramatic and unmistakably wild.

A memorable encounter after dark in Shompole, Kenya.

After dark, a herd of wildebeest gathers at the water’s edge in Shompole, Kenya.

For a few quiet moments, they stood almost shoulder to shoulder - drinking cautiously as their reflections formed a second herd beneath them. The deep blue night, rising dust and soft light added an atmosphere that felt both peaceful and slightly mysterious.

A simple but memorable scene from the African wilderness.
