This portrait captured in Varanasi is of a man applying pitch to the floor of a boat to waterproof the interior of the boat. He has his hands dipped in a bucket of pitch that he's applying to the wooden floor boards using a piece of cloth dipped in it. The funny expression on his face is due to his mouth being full of paan, which is betel leaves packed with to***co and betel nuts, that acts as a stimulant. The boats are repaired on the banks of the river itself, so they can be easily lowered into the river once repaired.

I came across these three friends chilling out in the narrow streets of Varanasi one early morning, even before the shops behind them opened up for the day's business. I don't know if the three of them were childhood friends growing up in the same area, or they got acquainted later in life, but I was able to see camaraderie between the three of them, finishing each other's sentences, pulling each other's leg, it was fun interacting with them. It may look like the person in the middle is agitated by my taking his photo, but he was actually in the middle of a conversation explaining something about the city and the morning times they spend reading the day's news and talking to passers by. Life looked slow and good spending time with them that morning.

Fire and Water - Came across this ram after two years after I first took a picture of him, it's the one pinned on the top of my page title "Golden Eyes". Since then he looks more calm and peaceful, you can see that one of his horns is broken now, probably in one of the many fights he had with other rams. It's as if this fireball of a guy has become calm and cool like he flowing waters, hence the title fire and water. If you observe carefully you can see that the left side of the face, the side with the broken horn is cool and bluish symbolizing water, while the other side is golden yellow and the horn still majestic, symbolizing fire.
