The Indian government has restricted several major CCTV brands, including Hikvision, Dahua, and TP-Link, effective April 1, 2026. This is not a "blanket ban" on all products but a strict enforcement of new cybersecurity and quality certification rules.
Which Brands Are Affected?
Hikvision and Dahua: These major Chinese manufacturers are effectively barred from selling internet-connected CCTV cameras. Authorities are reportedly refusing to grant the necessary certifications for products with Chinese-origin chipsets.
TP-Link: Although TP-Link has stated its Indian unit is part of a US-based entity, its internet-connected camera products have also faced sales restrictions due to these new rules.
Xiaomi and Realme: These popular smartphone brands have also reportedly exited the smart home camera segment in India after failing to secure the required security clearances.
Key Rules and Requirements
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has mandated strict compliance under the Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) framework.
Component Origin: Manufacturers must explicitly declare the country of origin for critical components like the System-on-Chip (SoC).
Cybersecurity Testing: Devices must pass rigorous lab testing for vulnerabilities that could allow unauthorized remote access or data breaches.
Mandatory Clearance: No internet-connected CCTV can be legally sold or newly installed without government security clearance.
Impact on Existing Users
Cameras Still Work: If you already have these cameras installed, they will not stop working and will not be seized.
Maintenance Issues: You may face difficulties getting warranty support, software updates, or spare parts in the future as these companies exit the market.
New Purchases: Starting April 1, 2026, you can only legally purchase and install government-certified models.
Certified Alternatives
Indian manufacturers have significantly expanded their market share (over 80% as of early 2026) by using secure, non-Chinese components.
