The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between - Mozart
For this portrait series, I invited bassist Shallu, who is one of the few double bass players in Chennai, India, to my studio. The double bass is the largest and lowest-pitched bowed string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra, however, it is not that popular compared to its smaller brothers – the violin and cello. I wanted to capture the intimate relationship a musician has with their instrument and music as a medium. Love, bliss, fulfilment, frustration, pain, loneliness, despair… while most people would have experienced these emotions, as a fellow musician (pianist), I personally feel that a musician (or any artist for that matter) experiences these emotions to a greater degree due to their commitment towards the art form. This profound experience is what enables a musician to convey emotions into the hearts of their audience through the music they create and perform.
