Meghalaya High Court Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of August 19 Violence

The High Court of Meghalaya has taken suo motu cognizance of the violence and vandalism reported during the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) procession on August 19, registering the matter as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).

A division bench of Justice H.S. Thangkhiew and Justice W. Diengdoh took up the matter on August 20. The court noted damage to government vehicles, out-of-state vehicles and public transport, as well as risks posed to citizens, including school-going children. It also took note of the reported desecration of statues of national heroes.

The Meghalaya government informed the court that some office bearers of the organisation involved had already been arrested in connection with the incident. ⚖️
