Grand Golden Chariot Of Our Lady Of Snow 2023"

16th Golden Chariot Procession Our Lady Of Snow

Remaking of the golden car of the 16th Century basilica in Thoothukudi :

When the first car of Our Lady of Snows was crafted in the beginning of 1800s by carpenters from Sri Lanka and Kerala, it cost about ₹1 lakh. The festival was held 15 times since 1806. The car has drawn along the streets of Thoothukudi on August 5.

The car is 53 feet tall marking the 53 beads of the Holy Rosary, a form of prayer to Mother Mary. The morning star that gives a hope to the mariners in the sea adorns the top of the car.

"Pearl palanquin:
Imported from Japan and gold paper pasted on the chariot. The entire chariot is studded with 9,000 precious stones imported from America. A beautiful mother-of-pearl palanquin is used to bring the image of the Mother from the temple to the golden chariot".
