Athira NA Kuchipudi Ensemble at Onam Varaghosham

Stills from the Kuchipudi group performance by the Kuchipudi Nrithya Ensemble, trained under Guru Vanaja Manohar of Athira Natya Academy, presented as part of the Onam Varaghosham organized by the Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala.

The dancers were Heera Krishna, Anjali S., Sisira P. Varma, Bhadra Sanjay, Kanchana K. Varma, Gaurinandana S., and Geethu Gopan. They were accompanied by Athira Manohar on nattuvangam, Sreedev Rajagopal on vocals, Manuraj Trivandrum on mridangam, and Sreekumar Trivandrum on violin.

The repertoire featured “Gajavadana beduve...”, a Ganesha sthuthi, followed by the Dasavatara Sabdam, a celebrated work of Vempati Chinna Satyam. The performance concluded with the tarangam "Shiva Shiva Bhava…", choreographed by the Mosalikantis, which narrates the story of how Lord Shiva humbled the arrogance of Ganga.

The performers were Gayathri P.S., Swathy B.S., Devika M.R., Abhirami Sunil S.R., Keerthana R., Kalyani J., and Sreelekshmi S.V. They were accompanied by their guru on nattuvangam, Destin Tom on vocals, Sudhin K. Suresh on mridangam, and Udupi Abhinav B. on violin.

The latter half of the recital, the tem began with Jayadeva’s Ashtapadi in raga Pantuvarali, choreographed by Soumya Sukumaran. The performance concluded with a thillana in raga Begada and Rama Mangalam in raga Madhyamavathi.

The former half of the recital began with a pushpanjali in raga Valachi, composed and choreographed by Sudarshan Kalakshetra. This was followed by a Jatiswaram in raga Arabhi and a sabdam in ragamalika, compositions of S. Rajaram and Arunachalam Pillai. The centerpiece was the Papanasam Sivan varnam in Sree Ranjini, choreographed by Rukmini Devi Arundel.

Stills from the Bharatanatyam Arangetram by Diya Nair, disciple of Acharya Pritam Das at the RDR Convention Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. She had the accompanying support of her guru in nattuvangam, Bhagyalakshmi Guruvayur in vocal, Sumod Sreedharan on mridangam, Thrissur M. Shyam Kalyan on violin, and Vazhappally Akhil Anilkumar on flute.

For her Arangetram, Diya presented a complete margam beginning with a Mallari in Gambheera Nattai, followed by a slokam, Chaturasra Eka Alarippu, and Bhairavi Jatiswaram. She then performed a sabdam composed by Natyacharya V.P. Dhananjayan, leading into the evening’s highlight—a Tanjore Quartet varnam in Reetigowla choreographed by Guru Rama Vaidyanathan. The recital continued with Swathi Thirunal’s Prabandha Kriti in Neelambari, an Ananda Bhairavi Thillana, and concluded with a traditional mangalam.
