The Lyrid meteor shower, occurring annually in April, is caused by Earth passing through the dust trail of Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher. These tiny dust particles burn up in our atmosphere, creating the streaks of light we see as meteors. The shower appears to radiate from the constellation Lyra, hence its name. While typically producing around 10-20 meteors per hour at its peak, it's also known for occasional bright fireballs.
