Srinagar Streets, Article 21 & Human Dignity: Is Political Crowd Mobilization Exploiting Ordinary Citizens?
What happened on the streets of Srinagar yesterday was not simply another political gathering.
It raises a much bigger question about human dignity, public spaces, political accountability, and the rights of ordinary citizens in India.
Article 21 of the Indian Constitution protects the right to life and personal liberty, and the Supreme Court has recognized human dignity as an important constitutional value.
So we have to ask:
1.When economically vulnerable people are brought into political gatherings through small financial incentives, freebies, or daily-wage-type payments, is that genuine public participation โ or is it the political exploitation of economic hardship?
2.And when women are made to stand for hours under the scorching sun as part of a political crowd, the issue deserves serious public discussion.
This is not about attacking one political party or supporting another.
It is about asking whether ordinary citizens should be treated as political numbers rather than people entitled to dignity, employment, opportunity and respect.
The Supreme Court's judgment in Amit Sahni v. Commissioner of Police is also relevant to the broader issue of assemblies and the use of public roads and spaces. The Court has emphasized that the right to assemble must be balanced against the rights of other citizens and the need to keep public spaces accessible.
The larger question is simple:
Are we building a society where people receive dignified employment and genuine opportunities or one where economic vulnerability can be converted into political crowds?
Kashmir deserves better.
India deserves better.
And our mothers and sisters deserve better than being reduced to numbers in a political gathering.
Dignity is bigger than money.
