Canon RF 20mm f/1.4L VCM – Tested Where It Matters

A big thank you to Canon India for trusting me with the Canon RF 20mm f/1.4L VCM during our Exposure's recent Jaisalmer & Kutch photo tour, paired with my Canon EOS R6 Mark II.

From expansive desert landscapes to the silence of the night sky, this lens proved to be an exceptional performer for both landscape and astro-landscape photography. The sharpness is outstanding edge-to-edge, the f/1.4 aperture is a game changer for night work, and the focusing accuracy, both in daylight and under challenging low-light conditions, is simply flawless.

The 20mm focal length is absolutely perfect for astro-landscape work, especially while capturing the Milky Way. What truly impressed me is the optical performance wide open at f/1.4. During star shooting, I did not notice any visible coma or chromatic aberration, which is incredibly important for clean and precise night sky images.

What stands out the most is how effortlessly this lens performs in real-world conditions. Whether it’s fast-paced shooting during golden hour or carefully composed frames under the stars, it delivers consistent, reliable, and professional results without compromise.

Experiences like this truly reinforce my confidence in the Canon system, where the gear allows you to focus purely on creativity without limitations.

|| Starlit Ruins ||
On a calm April night, beneath the glowing arch of the Milky Way, I stood at the ancient Roha Fort in Kutch. Its weathered stones and silent arches seemed to whisper tales from centuries past. Built under Rao Khengarji I and completed by Thakore Noganji in the 18th century, this fort once ruled over 52 villages - a proud seat of the Jadeja dynasty.
Long before cameras and sensors, the fort’s nobles would have admired this same celestial view with their naked eyes, perhaps even clearer than what my lens captured. As the soft golden light filled the ruins and the Milky Way unfurled above, it felt as if time itself stood still—where history, starlight, and silence met in one frame.

Before the Chicham Bridge stood as one of Asia’s highest marvels, crossing this 150-meter-deep gorge was an adrenaline-pumping adventure! Locals and thrill-seekers had to rely on a rickety ropeway made of wooden planks and metal wires, dangling over the dizzying drop with nothing but sheer willpower and muscle to pull themselves across. It wasn’t just a journey; it was a heart-racing, nerve-testing experience that separated the brave from the faint-hearted. The bridge we see today, built in 2017, might have made life easier, but it has also preserved the spirit of adventure that once defined this crossing.
