Cyanotype Workshop by Conrad Syiem @

“The process of capturing scenes around me by a camera began to draw my interest when I was 5-6 years old. The magical quality of reproducing actual settings onto negatives and on paper was something that held my attention and fascination. But it was not a few years later, then that I was allowed and given a chance to get a hand on a camera. My first "project" was capturing a Christmas Feast at my mother's ancestral village. I was about eleven.

Down the road, one would be inevitably drawn to the history of photography and the fundamentals on how objects are captured as images. Cyanotype was first discovered around the year 1842 by Sir John Herschel, some 15-16 years after the earliest surviving photograph View from the Window at Le Gras was taken. Cyanotype is a process of sensitizing Iron based light sensitive salts and reproducing images under ultra violet rays using the contact printing method.

The Workshop is aimed at introducing Cyanotype which will also involve walking through the process allowing participants to prepare their own prints hands on. The main Components of the workshop will consist of Pre-Printing Process and the Printing Process itself. Pre-Printing will contain Chemical procedure and creating Digital negatives. The printing Process will guide participants in printing either by a process called Photogram or through the use of negatives.”

Conrad Syiem will be conducting a workshop on cyanotype printing process at In Frame.
