🌺 Can the flowers offered to Goddess Durga help build a cleaner, greener Kolkata?

In an exclusive interview with **Lifeplus Arts & Cultural Magazine**, I spoke with Rajshree Guha, a Rotarian and nature lover, and Soumyendu Ganguly, Secretary of the Rotary Club of Calcutta Renaissance and Chief Engineer of Techno India Group, about an inspiring community initiative: Clean Green Kolkata Puja. 🌿

Adobe Illustrator: The Story Behind the Revolutionary Tool That Changed Graphic Design

What inspired the creation of Adobe Illustrator? The answer begins with a graphic designer and an idea to make the creative process easier.

Back in the 1980s, creating professional artwork for print was largely a manual process. Designers relied on their drawing skills, traditional tools and painstaking methods to produce precise illustrations and typography.

Then came an idea that would change the way designers worked.

In 1982, John Warnock and Charles Geschke founded Adobe Systems. Their PostScript technology was developed to help computers communicate complex text and graphics to printers, laying important groundwork for the desktop publishing revolution.

But there was another challenge waiting to be solved: how could designers create precise artwork on a computer without being limited by the size or resolution of the image?

For John Warnock, the inspiration was closer to home than one might imagine. His wife, Marva Warnock, was a graphic designer. Watching the manual drawing and design processes involved in her work helped inspire the idea of making such tasks easier through computer technology.

The vision was simple but powerful: give designers the ability to create artwork digitally, with precision and flexibility.

In 1987, Adobe Illustrator made its public debut on the Apple Macintosh.

Instead of building images from individual pixels, Illustrator used vector graphics—mathematical paths that define shapes, lines and curves. This meant an illustration could be enlarged from a small business card to a massive billboard without losing its sharpness.

One of its most influential features was the Pen Tool, which gave designers greater control over curves, outlines and shapes. It opened up new possibilities for logo design, typography, technical illustrations and professional print artwork.

The impact grew quickly.

In 1989, Illustrator arrived on Microsoft Windows, bringing its capabilities to a wider audience. Over the following decades, improved typography, layers, colour management and more sophisticated drawing tools helped establish it as an essential application for creative professionals.

In 2003, Illustrator became part of Adobe Creative Suite. In 2013, it moved to the Creative Cloud era, and the application has continued to evolve with cloud-based workflows, 3D capabilities and AI-powered creative features.

Today, Adobe Illustrator is far more than a drawing application. It is a creative platform used by designers around the world to transform ideas into logos, illustrations, branding, typography and visual communication.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this story is that a tool now used by millions of creatives began with a very human challenge: finding a better way to create.

Technology changed the process, but the purpose remained the same—to give creativity greater freedom.
