Intruz – Dongri, Goa

Intruz in Dongri is more than a festival it is a living memory of Goa’s pre-Portuguese past. Deeply rooted in the indigenous spring festival of Shigmo, Intruz carries the spirit of agrarian gratitude, community unity, and tribal identity.

When Portuguese rule restricted many local rituals, communities found intelligent ways to continue their traditions. Under the outward name of Intruz (associated with Carnival), they preserved their Shigmo practices safeguarding songs, rituals, and collective memory across generations.

What we witness today is not just celebration.
It is resilience.
It is cultural continuity.
It is ancestral wisdom carried forward.

In the village of Savai Verem, the Sakhya Hari Jatra carries a beautiful and ancient tradition rooted in faith and gratitude. During this festival, devotees hold arikana (areca nut) saplings in their hands and dance in rhythmic circles. This ritual is believed to have begun generations ago, when a disease once struck the arikana plants. The villagers prayed to their deity, promising that if the plants were saved, they would celebrate by dancing with the young arikana trees as an offering of thanks.

From that moment, the ritual became a living reminder of the bond between the community, their land, and their deity. Even today, people gather during the Jatra to honour this promise the arikana saplings, dancing together, and celebrating the harmony between nature and faith in Goa’s Savai Verem region.
