It has been a long long time, I got an opportunity to go out and shoot.

This was from "Kid's trade fair" at my son's school. Innovative idea by the school, to expose children to trade, dealing with people & handling money etc.

My son, wife and I had set up a funky photo booth. Shooting with kids means, you can hardly go wrong, as their expressions would cover for your photography flaws and there could be no better testament of that than this photo.

Rainy Season, Its time for Macro!!!

Pune is usually blessed with good monsoon and so is this year. It has rained well so far and every inch of open space is filled with lush green grass and colorful bushes. It's so soothing to eyes.

Last week, I suddenly noticed these teeny tiny flowers on the way to my little one's school. You won't believe, none of them is as big as small finger nail, though appearing big here. Macro technique makes it appear that big. One of them is actually ant size. No wonder, I did not notice them for so long. I had actually gone to photograph one particular flower, but when I kneeled down on the ground to get closer to the flower, I noticed whole universe of tiny flowers growing around, which is so obvious to miss otherwise. It was a jackpot for me getting so many interesting tiny subjects to capture when I expected just one, but it was really windy to capture the flower still. Now that I know there is whole tiny world existing there, I indeed calls for a revisit with proper planning and better preparation. Thinking of visiting different places around Pune to capture this tiny beauty. If you happened to know any such place then please do leave the name in comments below.

Its ideal to use a macro lens to photograph such objects, but well, I don't have one. I used a reverse mounting ring for my Nikon 50mm 1.8G and bit of hit and miss, as I did not have autofocus at my disposal. Blowing wind made it worse, but still could get away with some images.

Want to show motion in still image?? Try Panning..

Usually videos are the best way to capture motion, but what if you would like to represent motion in a still image. There is a technique called as "Panning", which could help you do just that.

Key to Panning is keeping really slow shutter speed and track your subject as it moves and click. In my case, it was Auto Rickshaw. Based on the subject speed, the actual shutter speed needed may vary, but 1/20 second could be a good starting point in most situations and later tweak as needed.

This photo was taken at Shanivarwada, which is really a busy place usually, with roads completely occupied with traffic and crowd. It was a cloudy day and the moment it started raining heavy, the whole scene changed. People on the road started running for shelter from rain. Roads suddenly became lonely with only few vehicle running, who used this opportunity to speed up.

Here is an effort to portray that moment.

When to go B&W? Debatable topic, isnโ€™t it?

I personally would prefer to go B&W, if there are not many colors in the scene and overall it looks pretty flat and boring or there are too many colors in the scene fighting each other.

Similar analogy goes with any food dish as well, where too many different flavors fighting each other is not good just as a dish having over all no taste. Again personal choice to everyone, but I would prefer a unique subtle taste to each dish, not sweet, sour, salty, spicy etc. all at the same time.

Exact same was the case with this scene. Very dramatic sky, with blue patches breaking out, little bit of sun shine in bits and pieces, dark reds and yellows and oranges popping out from the temple wall and dark greens from the bushes around. In nutshell, a little bit of everything, which was not working for my personal taste. Eventually decided to go for B&W. Of course shot it in color and then converted to B&W in post processing and added bit of contrast to make it a punchy and a pinch of post crop vignette to give it finishing touch.

Hope you would like it. Comment, share and keep watching this space for more updates.
