Hornbills of Dandeli

Every bird watcher's dream is to observe and click some Hornbill pics, in this attempt, we planned a second trip to Dandeli - Karanataka in less than seven months and we got lucky this time with Malabar Pied Hornbill.

Hornbills are very unique birds, they choose their partner for a lifetime and nest ones every year generally in the same nesting place usually in a tree hollow, the female hornbills shed all their belly feathers to prepare a soft bed for chicks, and stay inside from hatching eggs and till chick become a little grown-up, during nesting male covers the opening of the nest with wet mud and dung and leave a very small opening to supply the food (berry and insects), this cover of med and dung becomes hard over few days and protects the female Hornbill and chicks from any invasion from outside.

Before the nesting season the female feeds the male with rich quality food so that while she is in the nest hatching and raising the chicks, the male hornbill had adequate strength to fly several miles and bring food supply back to the nest for the female and chicks.

The Malabar pied hornbill is a large hornbill, at 65 cm (26 in) in length. It has mainly black plumage, apart from its white belly, throat patch, tail sides, and trailing edge to the wings.

Female feature: The Females have white orbital skin
Male feature: The male has black skin surrounding the eye
