Little Egret

These wading birds with snow white plumage never fail to catch your eyes. They are a common sight in cpastal areas and inland waterbodies. In Pulicat Lake, the egrets live alongside colonies of flamingos.

The Pulicat Lake is a brackish lagoon in the north of Chennai that attracts thousands of migratory birds every year. It is the best place in Chennai to spot flamingos and get those dreamy close-up famingo shots with sunrise/sunset in the backdrop.

Common Birds: Greater Flamingo, Lesser Flamingo, Terns, Storks, Pelicans, Egrets, Herons, Curlews

Distance from Chennai: 90 km (2 hours)

Local villagers from the Pazhaverkadu jetty / fish market ply boats to the flamingo wading area. Flamingos wade about 5 km from the seashore, in shallow waters. About a 15 min boat ride should take you there.

Greater Flamingo

Flamingos are the stars of Pulicat. Hundreds of thousands of flamingos flock to this brackish lagoon between every summer and paint the waters pink.

The Pulicat Bird sanctuary stretches across Tirpati district of Andhra Pradesh and Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu. It is better accessible from the Pazhaverkadu hamlet at Thiruvallur, north of Chennai.

Eurasian Curlew

What may seem like a deformity is actually a very useful adaptation. Curlews have curved bills that allow them to dig sideways when they forage the seabed for food. It helps them cover a wider area, enhancing their chances of getting food.

Curlews live alongside flamingos and other wading birds in the Pulicat Lake, near Chennai. The lake is the second largest brackish lagoon in India and is the summer resort for thousands of flamboyant flamingos that flock from afar.

Common Kingfishers

The Common Kingfishers are among the most attractive of the kingfisher species due their glowing green and blue colors. The colors are actually due to iridiscence and they appear different in different light and angles.

This cute kingfisher sat focused hunting for fish, in the Pallikaranai lake. Pallikaranai is a freshwater marsh within the city limits. It is a great birding hotspot in Chennai for migratory birds like pelicans, storks and a lot of other waterbirds.

Check out my previous post on Ashy Prinia for more information about the Pallikaranai marsh.

Grey Heron

Terrifying eyes and intimidating confidence - the herons are apex predators in their territories. This heron was intensly staring at a large fish - a potential prey, in the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Chennai.

The Arignar Anna Zoological Park (aka Vandalur Zoo) is the first public zoo in India. It sprawls over 1400 acres and houses over 60 species of birds. Apart from the caged exotic birds, you can spot a variety of waterbirds, tree birds and peacocks freely ranging inside the park.

The park may not be exciting for seasoned wildlife photographers, but a great place for beginners to practice wildlife photography and even understand animal behavior.
