Broken Karumadikuttan Buddha statue, in Karumadi village, Alappuzha district, of Kerala. This 3.5 feet tall black granite statue is believed to be from 9th Or 14th century. Historians believe the statue is one of the few remnants of Buddhist culture in the area from centuries ago.
The statue was abandoned for centuries in a nearby stream named "Karumady thodu". The left side of the statue is still missing. The statue is a subject of historical debate as the reason for its partial destruction is still elusive.
In 1930s, Sir Robert Bristow a colonial British engineer found the statue, and did appropriate actions to protect it. Now it's under the protection of Kerala Government.
