We reached Lachen in pitch dark not knowing what was waiting for us the next morning.

We started our day early as we had quite a few places to cover. As soon as we stepped out of the hotel, voila; We witnessed this majestic Himalayan peak. The snowcapped peak was shining in the golden rays! It was an absolutely stupendous view!

Lachen is a town in Mangan District in the Indian state of Sikkim. The name Lachen means "big pass". The Sikkimese government promotes it as a tourist destination. The town forms the base to the Chopta Valley and Gurudongmar Lake. An annual yak race, the Thangu is held there in summer.

Unlike other places in India, Lachen has a unique form of self-governance, Dzumsa. Every household is a member of this traditional administrative system, which is in charge of governing and organizing village activities.

Just about 129 km from Gangtok, Lachen is located at an altitude of 8838 ft. Seasons unfold timelessly in this high altitude habitat: gaily painted with myriad flowers in the spring and monsoon, bathed in spectacular weather in autumn and snow clad fairy-tale winters.

Dinner at 8838ft!

It's incredible how hotels function at remote high altitude towns like Lachen despite the delicate supply chain, difficult terrains like that in North Sikkim.

The hotels function, serve their guests well amidst difficult location, harsh weather, delicate supply chain, and the scarcity of resources in general.

Chungthang is a town in Mangan District in the Indian state of Sikkim. It is situated at the confluence of the Lachen and Lachung rivers, which combine to form the Teesta River. Located at a distance of 95 kilometres (59 mi) from the state capital Gangtok, the Indian Army has a major forward base with a medical centre in Chungthang.

Butterfly Waterfalls, also called Seven Sister Waterfalls is a serene waterfall located at Rakdong. It is at a distance of ~20 km from Gangtok and you'll typically come across it on your way from Gangtok to Lachen.

This pristine waterfall is accessible from the road, and has a well maintained 'viewing gallery' from where this photo is clicked. A nominal fee is charged to visit this tourist attraction.

We stayed at .gt during our vacation to Sikkim.

It is located about 2km from the famous MG Marg of Gangtok. So, connectivity to MG Marg is easy as you can find ample taxis to take you to the shopping hub!
gt has really spacious, well maintained rooms with panoramic views of the scenic valley. On a clear day, you will be treated with the view of Kangchenjunga peak, right from your room! The golden rays illuminating Kangchenjunga at sunrise is a sight to behold.

The team at .gt led by is warm, welcoming, and professional. We had a smooth experience at the hotel. not only made our stay at the hotel worth remembering but also helped us plan and execute the itinerary very well, including required permits and connected stays (a crucial part of Sikkim tourism).

The food, both veg and non-veg was excellent at .gt

The bustling MG Marg of Gangtok, Sikkim.

It is a spectacularly vibrant, well decorated shopping destination in Gangtok. Along with shopping, you may indulge in desserts at local bakeries, try local cuisines at various restaurants, or simply watch the life go by sitting at one of the benches. We loved the vibe of this place.
