Azorean Walk of Fame • Long before Hollywood’s cement stars, another walk of fame was laid down through the ancient town of Ponta Delgada. This little island city and the neighboring towns offer a charm that soothes the senses rather than exploits them. The stars here have no names, no affiliation, no sense of status, nor any achievements attached. They are moments to nothing. Except maybe those whose hands laid them down and feet that have stepped over them. On these stars, all are famous who walk them.

Paradise Flow • The Azores is a place we’re waterfalls flow straight into the sea. As close to paradise as anything on Earth. This scene, this frame, is a diorama of that paradise and the energy within it.

Islands are microcosms against our larger world. We can see things more acutely, where the forces of nature play with one another seem more dramatic simple because of the islands isolated scale. In truth, the same forces are at play on a planetary level.

Island offer us the chance to see the fragility of nature. Encourage us to be apt stewards of their resources. They also show us aspects of ourselves as human beings. How we treat one another when we’re stuck on a single rock with no where to go.

What’s really important in life is made so much more clear on an island. Kindness goes farther. Hate comes back to you twice as fast. Love perpetuates like a field of flowers coming into bloom if given the necessary conditions.

Visit islands. Come to paradise. Learn its ways. Then bring it with you wherever you go.

There has unfortunately been a resurgence in cases of bird flu here in NJ and we wanted to take the time to share some things you can do to help keep our feathered friends safe.

The NJDEP Department of Fish & Wildlife is asking that people report any sick or dead birds they see, especially those in groups of five or more in an area, to their wild bird disease reporting form!

A sick bird can sometimes be hard to spot but generally will have discharge coming from its nose, seem uncoordinated, have diarrhea, or will be coughing/sneezing.

While bird flu poses a lower risk to humans, DO NOT approach or handle sick or dead animals, please contact the state or a licensed animal hospital for help.

Together, we can help keep Barnegat Bay's bird's safe!

Disconnected • We’ve all been here. We’ve all been surrounded by beauty with our heads buried in distraction. Tuning in to nonsense and turning out of the great story we know as life. It requires such a moment to even write this post.

As technology evolves, it becomes more crucial we evolve to counter it. That’s adaptation, balance, that’s survival. Nature gave us everything we need, but we wanted more… why? What more is there than beauty, nature, and relationships. What are we all looking for on our devices? What are they giving us that life can’t? Maybe it’s a consequence of mastering our own density and the comfortability we’ve created in our society? But we will always be a species with one hand tied behind our backs if we remain…disconnected.

Plover Story • Whenever I see a Piping Plover I’m reminded of the tales from ancient mythology of various gods molding beings from clay. Watch these birds long enough as I have and you’d feel the same. More than any other shorebird they seem to be molded by the very sand they rove and plove. Like the wind shaped sand into plover form and gave it a spark of personality.

These little birds are gems of our beaches on the Atlantic coast. We need to protect the sands on which they were formed.

Tide-pool-lings • The rock pools of the Azores are miniature vortices of mystery that host a slew of secrets from the Atlantic Ocean. No creature is more at home here than the Rock-pool Blenny. The most common secret in these pools of mystery, this tiny fish makes peering it on these microscopic worlds entertaining. At any one time a half a dozen of these tiny beings could swim up to your head in the water, much like humans would approach the arrival of extra terrestrial life - with cautious intrigue and reluctant courage.
The day I stop dipping my face in to tide pools, is the day the ocean ceases to exist. Worlds of wonder await us, the blennies in the pool, and those who visit, if we are courageous and curious enough to dive head first!

The Point • The idea of preserving something that is always changing has perplexed me for some time. It’s often a point of confusion for me when dealing with environmental issues. It’s human nature to want to make something last forever, yet nature exists in a state of constant change. It seems like the two were set up to conflict from the get-go. Until you remember that nature made us… and like beavers who build damns to preserve the water they need, our act of preserving is an act of change in and of itself, and our desire to preserve the things we love, an instinctual call to action to participate in nature’s elaborate web of change.

The South Topsail Preserve wasn’t created to keep The Point the same forever… it was preserved so nature could take its course freely there forever! That is “The Point” of conservation, among others; to give guard rails to natures growth, abundance, and beauty.

Part of the magic of this place is that every time I visit, I know it will be a little different. That it will be the same place I know and love, but have something new to show me every time.

Spires of Compassion • Alien. That’s how I can only describe the shores of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Yet, there is nothing “extra” about the terra here. The same old stuff that I’m accustomed to, that brings warmth, familiarity, comfort, is rearranged into something… unknown. Maybe that is it’s gift though… the gift of the universe… to take what’s foreign and make it family… to know the unknown, understand the misunderstood. And the more we do this the more each of our own individual little worlds, which let’s be honest are down right alien to one another, become one world… existing in a warm, familiar, comforting embrace.
