Most editors struggle with one question: how do you choose the right music for a video?
Not because there aren’t good tracks available… but because the decision framework is incomplete.
In this video, I break down a simple way filmmakers and video editors can approach background music selection through storytelling.
Instead of randomly trying tracks, we look at three things:
• Rhythm – How fast or slow does your story move? Your cuts decide the pace of the music.
• Emotion – What should the audience feel? Heroism, tension, fear, wonder?
• Context – What exactly is happening in the scene? Actor movement, expressions, environment.
Once you start analysing music this way, choosing background music for short films, YouTube videos, or even Instagram reels becomes much more intentional.
In this breakdown, I’ll show:
• How I selected the right cinematic music for a trailer
• How I compressed a 7-minute score into a tight 40-second edit
• The storytelling logic behind every cut, text placement, and sound design decision
If you’re a video editor or filmmaker trying to improve storytelling through editing, this video will completely change how you approach music in your edits.
