When you look closely at the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., you'll notice that the color of the stone at the bottom of the monument is slightly different from that at the top. There's an interesting story behind this: Stoppage (1854-1877): Construction of this monument began in 1848. But in 1854, due to a lack of funds and then the American Civil War, the work was completely stopped. Incomplete for 20 Years: For the next 22-23 years, this monument stood as just an incomplete stump. People used to laugh at it. Use of a Different Quarry: When work resumed in 1877, the original quarry from which the stone was coming had closed. Therefore, stone was forced to be sourced from another location. Change in Color: Initially, both stones appeared identical, but over time, due to weather, they aged differently. Today, a clear "color line" is visible, indicating where work stopped during the Civil War.
