꧁ JEWELS OF HINDUSTAN: ROYAL TREASURES : THE JEWELLED SEHRA — A BRIDEGROOM BEHIND A CURTAIN OF RUBIES, PEARLS & EMERALDS ꧂.
Imagine the final moments before a great nineteenth-century wedding procession.
The bridegroom is dressed. The household gathers. Then comes sehra-bandi—the tying of the ceremonial veil before the groom steps out with the baraat.
Surviving from this world is an extraordinary Sehra and Topi, catalogued by Christie’s as “Possibly North India, circa 19th century.” The fitted cotton/silk cap carries a gem-set border from which descend 25 strands of rubies, pearls and emeralds, ending in tassels. The jewelled border measures 25.4 cm across; the suspended section falls 34.2 cm, creating a glittering curtain before the bridegroom’s face.
In Awadh, sehra-bandi formed part of elite wedding ritual. Documentation from the region records the sehra being tied immediately before the baraat departed, accompanied by ceremonial wedding songs.
And here the mystery becomes irresistible.
Could this spectacular example have belonged to the aristocratic world of Lucknow and the Nawabs of Awadh—or perhaps to another princely milieu, even the world of the Nizams of Hyderabad?
It is possible to imagine such settings, but there is presently no evidence establishing any of them for this object. Christie’s names neither Lucknow nor Hyderabad, neither a Nawab nor a Nizam, and records no original wearer. Its cautious attribution remains simply “possibly North India.”
That uncertainty is part of its fascination.
The groom has disappeared from history. His wedding is forgotten. Yet the veil that once concealed his face survives—25 jewelled strands preserving the splendour of a vanished celebration.
