Another One

When you’re a child you learn there are three dimensions
Height, width and depth
Like a shoebox
Then later you hear there’s a fourth dimension
Time
Hmm
Then some say there can be five, six, seven…

Have a beer at the bar
I look down at the glass and feel glad

Really grateful for honouring me with the grant and enabling me to continue my work. Thank you SherGilSundaram ArtsFoundation] and the jury, my nominators and my dear ones.

Posted • SherGilSundaram ArtsFoundation] SSAF is delighted to announce that Prakash Bhuyan is the recipient of the 2022 Umrao Singh Sher-Gil Grant for Photography for the category of ‘documentary photography’.

Prakash’s project titled ‘Across’ reflects on how ideas of belonging, family, identity and cultural memory are shaped and reinterpreted by the consequences of making of nation states and drawing of borders.

The Indo–Bangla borderland in the northeast of India evokes hierarchies of histories and mobility. The borderland is a geography of delicate webs of relationships where a sense of fragmentation prevails. Ethnic and religious minorities who reside here, by virtue of their location, are rendered even more marginal to the project of the nation-state.

The Garos are an ethnic, religious and linguistic minority in India and in Bangladesh. They are one of the largest communities who reside in this borderland. Before the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947, the imagination of a Garo homeland in the colonial times included a contiguous landmass of hills and plains which included parts of what are now India and Bangladesh. The partition in 1947 divided the larger Garo community against their will into residents of two nation states, India and Pakistan. When Bangladesh was formed, the Garos in erstwhile Pakistan became citizens of the new state, Bangladesh.

During the liberation war of 1971, Renu's elder sister Senu and younger sister Minu crossed the border and went to India. Later they married and settled down in Assam. Renu could never go to India to see her sisters because she did not have a passport. Senu passed away in India in 2017. It had been 17 years since they saw each other.

…Listen to me as one listens to the rain,
not attentive, not distracted,
light footsteps, thin drizzle,
water that is air, air that is time,
the day is still leaving,
the night has yet to arrive,
figurations of mist
at the turn of the corner,
figurations of time
at the bend in this pause,
listen to me as one listens to the rain,
without listening, hear what I say
with eyes open inward, asleep
with all five senses awake,
it's raining, light footsteps, a murmur of syllables,
air and water, words with no weight:
what we are and are,
the days and years, this moment,
weightless time and heavy sorrow,
listen to me as one listens to the rain….

Posted • It took me four years to get here but my investigation is finally out on how Assam Border Police initiates biased citizenship proceedings against mostly Muslims, many of whom were migrant workers. I analysed over a 100 police inquiry reports showing exactly how they did it and Gauhati High Court records to see how many times have they been pulled up (minuscule!). Plus, I go deep into how the All Assam Students Union were once involved in this chase to detect illegal foreigners.

Thanks to the few who believed in this project and to the many who didn’t. Every rejection and dismissal only strengthened my determination to bring this out!

Before the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947, the imagination of a Garo homeland was a contiguous landmass which included parts of what is now India and Bangladesh. Partition and subsequent formation of nation states in the subcontinent divided the larger Garo community against their will. At present the Garos are an ethnic, religious and linguistic minority both in India and in Bangladesh. They are an indigenous people living on either side of an international border separated by a fence.

‘Across’ reflects on how ideas of belonging, family, identity and cultural memory are shaped and reinterpreted by the consequences of making of nation states and drawing of borders.

The project anchors personal histories and collective memory of the Garo community in the broader context of the history of migration, mobility, identity formation and nation building.
