The island is Amami Oshima, a lush subtropical paradise off the southern coast of Japan, home to species found nowhere else on Earth.
The snake was the Habu pit viper, growing up to 2.4 meters long, capable of killing a person within 20 minutes. By the 1970s, over 100 people were being bitten every year. Residents were abandoning their homes. Officials were desperate. Their solution seemed brilliant. Mongooses from Bangladesh were imported and released onto the island in 1979. After all, mongooses were famous in India for killing cobras.
They were immune to snake venom. What could go wrong? Almost everything, it turned out. Nobody had properly verified one critical detail before the plan launched. Mongooses are active during the day. Habu snakes hunt at night. The two animals almost never crossed paths. Instead, the mongooses did what any hungry predator would do: they hunted what was easy. The Amami rabbit, one of the rarest animals on the planet, described by scientists as a "living fossil" because it resembles rabbits from 40 million years ago, became their main prey. So did endemic frogs, rare birds, and native rats that had lived undisturbed on the island for millions of years. 30 mongooses became 10,000 by the year 2000.
Japan was forced to launch one of the most expensive and ambitious wildlife eradication programs ever attempted, deploying 30,000 traps, trained sniffer dogs, sensor networks, and teams of field workers for over three decades. By the time it was done, approximately 32,000 mongooses had been captured at a cost running into millions of dollars. On September 3, 2024, Japan's Ministry of the Environment declared Amami Oshima mongoose-free, a genuine world first. This was the largest island in history from which a long-settled mongoose population had ever been successfully removed. And the cruelest twist? The Habu snake problem had already been fixing itself. With better antivenom access and improved healthcare, no one had died from a Habu bite since 1992. The mongooses were never necessary.
