Recognizable by its stunning orange crest with black tips, the hoopoe can open and close its crown like a fan. It raises it when excited, alert, or landing — almost like it’s performing for us.
Its name actually comes from its soft call — “hoo-poo, hoo-poo.” If you hear that sound in open fields or gardens, you might be lucky enough to spot one nearby.
Look at its wings while flying — those bold black and white stripes make it look almost like a butterfly in motion. That pattern helps it stand out in the sky.
But this bird isn’t just beautiful — it’s also smart and resourceful. The hoopoe uses its long curved beak to probe the ground for insects, larvae, and grubs. It plays an important role in controlling insect populations.
Here’s something fascinating — during nesting season, the female and chicks can produce a strong smell to protect themselves from predators. Nature’s own defense system.
The Eurasian Hoopoe is also culturally significant and even serves as the national bird of Israel.
Elegant. Unique. Intelligent.
The crowned wonder of the wild — the Eurasian Hoopoe. 🪶🌿
