We had just returned to the Halduparao FRH, dusting off after the morning drive. While the Collared Francolin was technically on my checklist, we hadn’t gone out specifically looking for it, and honestly, I didn’t really expect to cross paths with one today.
We were busy unloading the vehicle when our guide suddenly paused and pointed to the tree shading our rest house. “Look there,” he whispered.
And there it was. Not deep in the forest, but waiting right above us. It’s funny how you can scour the wilderness for hours, only to find a gem like this perched quietly in your own “backyard,” spotted thanks to the sharp eyes of our guide.

White crested Laughing-thrush

Perched at the entrance of the Vatanvasa gate in Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary, I watched this white‑crested laughingthrush hold court like a tiny forest monarch. Not many people know that these birds often act as noisy sentinels, raising an alarm with their chattering calls whenever a predator sneaks close, quietly keeping the whole forest community informed. The gate itself feels like a birder’s paradise, where such secret dramas play out all around and every visit gifts a new story right at the doorstep of the jungle.

One of the most unusual behaviours described for the white‑crested laughingthrush is “false feeding,” where helpers at the nest sometimes go through all the motions of feeding chicks but arrive with an empty bill, offering no food at all. Experts studying cooperative breeding in this species report that these apparently pointless trips still seem to play a social role within the group, making this behaviour especially puzzling and rarely known outside scientific literature.
