The Clifton Suspension Bridge is a Grade I listed suspension bridge spanning the Avon Gorge and the River Avon, connecting Clifton in Bristol to Leigh Woods in North Somerset. Designed originally by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1831, it stands as one of the most famous landmarks in Bristol and an icon of Victorian civil engineering.

Key Details
Designer & History: 24-year-old Isambard Kingdom Brunel won a competition to design the bridge in 1831. Work was repeatedly stalled by lack of funds and the 1831 Bristol Riots. Brunel died in 1859 before seeing it built; engineers William Henry Barlow and Sir John Hawkshaw revised the design and completed construction as a memorial to him in 1864.
Dimensions: Total length of 1,352 ft (412 m) with a central span of 702 ft (214 m) hanging 245 ft (75 m) above high water.
Operation & Tolls: It remains a working toll bridge operated 24/7 by the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust. Pedestrians and cyclists cross for free, while motor vehicles pay a £1 contactless toll.
Visitor Info: A free visitor center and museum operates on the Leigh Woods side, detailing the history and offer hard-hat tours of the hidden stone vaults beneath the abutments.
